Story
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

A practical guide to understanding trauma and its effect on people who have experienced it.
Reviewed: 01-08-24
as someone who has not gone through past trauma, this was a very helpful guide to help me understand some of the actions and reactions of people who may have experienced it in the past. from the outside looking in, many things used to seem very irrational and overly dramatic. i now have better tools to work with my spouse and her family. i believe this book can help anyone with exposure to trauma be it personal experience or through the experience of a loved one. highly recommended!

Maxwell takes a closer look at failure - and reveals that the secret of moving beyond failure is to use it as a lesson and a stepping-stone. He covers the top reasons people fail and shows how to master fear instead of being mastered by it. Listeners will discover that positive benefits can accompany negative experiences - if you have the right attitude.

could've been shorter and the use of so many lists makes it feel too much like a how to book and detracts from the material. otherwise it was informative and had some great points.

More than 30 years ago, nutrition researcher T. What they found, when combined with findings in Campbell's laboratory, opened their eyes to the dangers of a diet high in animal protein and the unparalleled health benefits of a whole foods, plant-based diet.

Story
In 2012, on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan, an improvised explosive device left Dan Crenshaw's right eye destroyed and his left blinded. Only through the careful hand of his surgeons, and what doctors called a miracle, did Crenshaw's left eye recover partial vision. And yet, he persevered, completing two more deployments. Why? There are certain stories we tell ourselves about the hardships we face—we can become paralyzed by adversity or we can adapt and overcome. We can be fragile or we can find our fortitude. Crenshaw delivers a set of lessons to help you do just that.

Story
A smart and funny book by a prominent Harvard psychologist, which uses groundbreaking research and (often hilarious) anecdotes to show us why we’re so lousy at predicting what will make us happy–and what we can do about it. Most of us spend our lives steering ourselves toward the best of all possible futures, only to find that tomorrow rarely turns out as we had expected. Why? As Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert explains, when people try to imagine what the future will hold, they make some basic and consistent mistakes.

some good insight but very hard to get through
Reviewed: 08-04-21
I've listened to the author on some podcasts and found him interesting so I decided to purchase this audio book. while some of the key content is insightful, the rambling anecdotes and off point topics made the book hard to follow. I also found it to reference religion a little too much for my liking. For similar books on human psychology and how to find meaning, consider The Happiness Hypothesis or The Coddling of the American Mind both by Jonathan Haidt. I found both of those book succinct and to the point backed by scientific. studies. This book will feel very much like a college lecture.

This is a book for anyone who is confused by what’s happening on college campuses today, or has children, or is concerned about the growing inability of Americans to live and work and cooperate across party lines.

What goes up, must come down. As any student of financial history knows, the dizzying heights of the stock market can't continue indefinitely - especially since asset prices have been artificially inflated by investor optimism around the Trump administration, ruinously low interest rates, and the infiltration of behavioral economics into our financial lives. The elites are prepared, but what's the average investor to do?
