Misleading Title
Reviewed: 07-18-23
I've listened to all of the Michael Bennett series books. I've enjoyed most of them, especially the earlier books, but the one-word titles are misleading. "Obsessed" is one of them, Where was the obsession? I would categorize this story as a crime/mystery, and not a psychological thriller. I will continue to listen to future books on this series, but I hope the next title reflects the storyline much better.

Listening to this book was very frustrating. The story was unbelievable and the female main character was totally clueless and wimpy. The narrator did a great job, though.

Story
To all appearances, Dan Chase is a harmless retiree in Vermont with two big mutts and a grown daughter he keeps in touch with by phone. But most 60-year-old widowers don't have multiple driver's licenses, savings stockpiled in banks across the country, and a bugout kit with two Beretta Nanos stashed in the spare bedroom closet. Most have not spent decades on the run.

Story
Cass is having a hard time since the night she saw the car in the woods, on the winding rural road, in the middle of a downpour, with the woman sitting inside - the woman who was killed. She's been trying to put the crime out of her mind; what could she have done, really? It's a dangerous road to be on in the middle of a storm. Her husband would be furious if he knew she'd broken her promise not to take that shortcut home. And she probably would only have been hurt herself if she'd stopped.

After reading the rave reviews, I was looking forward to listening to this book. Sadly, I found this story to be so unbelievable, I just couldn't get into it. I made myself finish the book in the hopes that it would get exciting or suspenseful, but no such luck. I've enjoyed other Dean Koontz books through the years, however, this one is not for me.

Albert and Alice Graves live a normal, if monotonous, domestic life. They never had children; they spend their days tending to their home and enjoying their time together. One day, when the oil man, Richard, is refilling their furnace, Alice invites him to dinner, never suspecting that a casual act of charity will lead to a horrifying, morbid discovery in the crawlspace underneath their beloved house.

My mom and I read this story when it first came out in the 70's. We really enjoyed it and remembered it fondly through the years. I felt like I was the one experiencing what this couple was going through. Joe Barrett did an excellent job, all the characters' voices were believable.
Lastly, it is a pleasure to read a book without having to endure unnecessary obscenities and swearing.
Mom would've loved the audio version.
