Since the 1970s, FantasticLand has been the theme park where "Fun is Guaranteed!" But when a hurricane ravages the Florida coast and isolates the park, the employees find it anything but fun. Five weeks later, the authorities who rescue the survivors encounter a scene of horror. Unique and immersive story

Fantasticland isn't a book I would normally have picked up, but I'm so glad I did. It was such a gripping story that felt like nonfiction. The narrators did an amazing job at telling this tale and selling all the unique characters. I definitely recommend!

It was just okay
Reviewed: 06-29-24
Whoever reviewed this book and compared it to Tana French's really baited me, and I wholeheartedly disagree. The main characters were all equally unlikeable, and I felt like the twist was interesting but predictable. The scenes meant to create suspense and the "cliffhangers" in nearly every chapter were super cheesy.

Another gem by Tana French
Reviewed: 03-25-24
I love the depth of Tana French's characters and how deeply you can feel their emotions through her prose. She uses the environment artfully to foreshadow and reflect the central conflict. It took me a little bit to get used to the narrator's gravelly voice, but he was really adept at switching between accents and giving every character their own voice. Can't wait for Tana French's next novel!

I fell in love with the characters in this story. I was rooting for all of them at different points and at times, I felt like another member of the Bird family. I thought the narrator did an amazing job giving a unique voice to each character and never took me out of the story. I definitely recommend this book!

Insufferable main character & predictable plot
Reviewed: 01-27-24
I listened to the Housemaid and the Housemaid's Secret and really the characters so I thought I'd try another Freida McFadden book. I could barely make it through this one. The main character is such a pick-me girl, talking about how she wishes she could wear heels to her nursing job and how skinny and fit she is thanks to cheerleading. She's maliciously stupid and overall very annoying. The plot was dry, the twist was predictable, and the epilogue made me cringe.

Unique take on a Whodunnit with interesting characters
Reviewed: 01-01-24
I really enjoyed this book and the narrator! I feel like many whodunnit stories become cliche by trying too hard to force every character to have a motive. I don't even think the mystery aspect of this book was where it shined the most. Rather, the gradual revelation of Paris's troubled past and struggles was gripping and kept me listening intently! Excited to read more of Hillier's work!

Story
On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

Captivating plot with a twist I didn't see coming
Reviewed: 09-21-23
I usually struggle with books told from more than two characters' perspectives, but I liked how Foley executed this. I liked all the characters and found the narration for each to really match each one. I didn't see the twist at the end coming, and I really enjoyed the way all the storylines converged for a satisfying conclusion.

Twenty-five years ago, Maggie Holt and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. Three weeks later they fled in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. His horror memoir of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity — and skepticism.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. I appreciated that it had elements of a horror book mixed and elements of a thriller/who-dun-it book. I couldn't have predicted the ending and I feel like the ultimate conclusion was a little more complicated than it needed to be, but I can forgive that since I really enjoyed the rest of the story.

Cartoonish villains and bad audio quality
Reviewed: 06-23-23
I really wanted to like this book, but there are a few things that made me dislike it. First, having the (at first) anonymous villain narrated by the same character who ended up being the villain was a huge spoiler right from the beginning. Second, the narrator for Mia sounded like she was recording on a 2001 Nokia cellphone. Third, the villains in this story got more and more cartoonish as it went on, with their actions becoming less believable by the chapter. There was no one to really root for in this book. I've enjoyed John Marrs books before, but this one really missed the mark for me.
