“Extraordinary.”—Maureen Corrigan, The Washington Post

“Hailed as the queen of Irish crime fiction, French spins a taut tale of retribution, sacrifice, and family.”—TIME

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Searcher and “one of the greatest crime novelists writing today” (Vox), a spellbinding new novel set in the Irish countryside.

It’s a blazing summer when two men arrive in a small village in the West of Ireland. One of them is coming home. Both of them are coming to get rich. One of them is coming to die.

Cal Hooper took early retirement from Chicago PD and moved to rural Ireland looking for peace. He’s found it, more or less: he’s built a relationship with a local woman, Lena, and he’s gradually turning Trey Reddy from a half-feral teenager into a good kid going good places. But then Trey’s long-absent father reappears, bringing along an English millionaire and a scheme to find gold in the townland, and suddenly everything the three of them have been building is under threat. Cal and Lena are both ready to do whatever it takes to protect Trey, but Trey doesn’t want protecting. What she wants is revenge.

From the writer who is “in a class by herself,” (The New York Times), a nuanced, atmospheric tale that explores what we’ll do for our loved ones, what we’ll do for revenge, and what we sacrifice when the two collide.

good not her best work

I love Tana French and enjoyed this book but I like the Dublin Detective Squad books better.

Tana French is the GOAT

I'm not much of a reviewer but my love for everything Tana French, especially this new book, requires me to shout it from the mountaintops. No other living writer captures the language, the geography and spirit of a small community than she. Although this has a mystery at it's center, it's the way she draws her characters and nails the Irish countryside that make it a must listen. And Roger Clark is most definitely in the elite of narrators.

Wish it were longer

I just love these books. This second one is just as good, maybe better than the first. Tana French knows how to make her characters feel like old friends and her settings like familiar places. The narration was excellent as usual. Sad it's over.

We need to clone Tana French a few times over so there can be more books like these.

Keep cal hooper coming!

Great story two years after the original Cal Hooper novel. Teresa is now 15 and still an enigma. Lots of twists and turns and characters you love to hate or just love this is a great read and Roger Clark does a beautiful job narrating

Awesome Book!

Another good one! Always read her books over. Characters come alive and make you love them like they could be real people. Can’t wait for the next one. Note: I could do without some of the cursing but I have to say there’s less of in Tana’s books than a lot of others. I would excellent writers could come up with better language.

Thoroughly enjoyed this sequel!

Very fleshed out characters, good progression from first book, loved the mystery aspect and the who done it caught me by surprize but made perfect sense. I'll be reading more of Tana French.

Complex subtle and engaging characters

Not your traditional crime novel but all the better for it. This is her best yet.

Title?

What did the title have to do with the story? What am I missing? Other than that confusing bit, I enjoyed it.
