“Hailed as the queen of Irish crime fiction, French spins a taut tale of retribution, sacrifice, and family.”—TIME

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Searcher and “one of the greatest crime novelists writing today” (Vox), a spellbinding new novel set in the Irish countryside.

It’s a blazing summer when two men arrive in a small village in the West of Ireland. One of them is coming home. Both of them are coming to get rich. One of them is coming to die.

Cal Hooper took early retirement from Chicago PD and moved to rural Ireland looking for peace. He’s found it, more or less: he’s built a relationship with a local woman, Lena, and he’s gradually turning Trey Reddy from a half-feral teenager into a good kid going good places. But then Trey’s long-absent father reappears, bringing along an English millionaire and a scheme to find gold in the townland, and suddenly everything the three of them have been building is under threat. Cal and Lena are both ready to do whatever it takes to protect Trey, but Trey doesn’t want protecting. What she wants is revenge.

From the writer who is “in a class by herself,” (The New York Times), a nuanced, atmospheric tale that explores what we’ll do for our loved ones, what we’ll do for revenge, and what we sacrifice when the two collide.

Even better than Seachers

Excellent sequel; much more engaging than the first book. Clark’s narration is outstanding . French’s sensuous exploration of the depths and breadth of human chaos is stunning as usual.

Really good story , but...

The long conversations, especially among the men in the pub, were a little drawn out, so I cheated and increased the speed a bit to get through it. Excellent narration, didn't overdo the Irish accent like some readers. Fascinating story.

Storytelling at it's finest.

Great narration, prose, dialog, and characters. Second Cal Hooper mystery set in Western Ireland. Hope there will be more. Highly recommend.

You can trust Tana French

You can trust Tana French to have a well written and engaging story and this series is no different. After the first Cal Hooper story, I wanted to know more, and this time is no different. I am invested in his and all the other character’s lives. Now I just have to wait for the next one.

Tana always comes through.

I always read her books and can't wait for the next one . This is a sequel to her last book and is just as good as the first.
The reader is excellent. I didn't find it predictable and wouldn't have guessed how it ended.

Another gem by Tana French

I love the depth of Tana French's characters and how deeply you can feel their emotions through her prose. She uses the environment artfully to foreshadow and reflect the central conflict. It took me a little bit to get used to the narrator's gravelly voice, but he was really adept at switching between accents and giving every character their own voice. Can't wait for Tana French's next novel!

My Fave Tana French so far!

A favorite - enjoyable from start to finish! Satisfying is all the TF ways, but also new angles. Read the first book before the second or you’ll be lost :)

The plot was obvious

A good book but too predictable except for the nuance at the end. The narrator worked too hard to get authentic sounding accents. Most of the time I felt he was shouting at me

I enjoy this author and wish she wrote more

Good story. Great voice work. did not like this as much as I liked the first book, but it was still very good. Great reader makes a big difference. But the writing in this is good like I said I wish she would write more of these more frequently. That’s my only criticism and that’s really just being greedy.!
