Ca'mon Bad Reviews! This course is amazing!
- By Iatrophus Lauroti on 06-06-16
A good introduction to storytelling
Reviewed: 10-30-22
As someone who speaks for a living, I have made it a discipline to learn from other speakers in their fields and see how I can apply their wisdom to my own field. I found this course full of examples of stories, and the basics of storytelling. At 12+ hours the last 1/3 of the course was an exercise discipline to finish, but it also had a higher percentage of the author’s practical advice. If you want to try your hand at storytelling but aren’t sure where to start, this is a great introduction. If you speak in front of others often, this might not be the best course, but there will certainly be some good reminders and alternative perspectives to what you may likely already be doing.
This was originally free, but I went ahead and purchased it because I saw the value and wanted it to be in my resources.

Story
Self-initiation is killing our young men. Without strong mentors, boys are walking alone into a wilderness of conflicting messages about who they should be as men. It's no wonder that our sons are confused about what the world expects from them and what they should expect of themselves. The Intentional Father is the antidote. This concise book is filled with practical steps to help men raise sons of consequence—young men who know what they believe, know who they are, and will stand up against the negative cultural trends of our day.

Like a compass for a choose your own adventure with your son.

As a father, I found this book helpful to lay out a vision for intentionally raising my son into manhood. It provided direction but allows for a customized path. If you want someone to tell you what to do in specific details this text is going to disappoint you, but if you are looking for principles and a path to walk in helping your son it is definitely worth the read. I would recommend picking up the hard copy as there are things you will want to see in this process.

Story
In an era in which many Christians consider Jesus a beloved but remote savior, Willard argues compellingly for the relevance of God to every aspect of our existence. Masterfully capturing the central insights of Christ's teachings in a fresh way for today's seekers, he helps us to explore a revolutionary way to experience God by knowing him as an essential part of the here and now, rather than only as part of the hereafter.

An important work that others build on.
Reviewed: 08-19-21
The Divine Conspiracy, in my opinion, is one of the more important works of this generation for Christians. Like most Willard books, it can at times be difficult to read but as he begins to bring all of the different concepts together at the end, you begin to see how masterfully unified these concepts are. If you want to read a philosophical approach to The Kingdom of God in light of Scripture and how it should impact the way we live today as followers of Jesus then this is worth reading. I see much of what Willard writes influencing multiple other authors today. This is not an easy listen, but it is worth the commitment to finish. I picked up a paper copy so that I could go back through specific areas, but the audiobook helped me get through a book I have wanted to read for years.

Letters to Malcolm: Chiefly on Prayer

Story
In the form of warm, relaxed letters to a close friend, C. S. Lewis meditates on many puzzling questions concerning the intimate dialogue between man and God. He considers practical and metaphysical aspects of prayer, such as when we pray and where. He questions why we seek to inform God in our prayers if he is omniscient, whether there is an ideal form of prayer, and which of our many selves we show to God while praying.

Similar to Screwtape, but focused on pray

If you like Lewis and are curious on his thoughts on prayer this is worth the read. Although it wasn’t as popular as his other works, this is still full of concepts worth interacting with.
