They say that history is written by the victors, but even then, you only get what they want you to hear.
This book is insightful, entertaining, and eye-opening! Fortunately for us, Oppenheimer and Groves are two deep characters in the same story. Will definitely give this another listen very soon.

Story
The ordeal of the whaleship Essex was an event as mythic in the nineteenth century as the sinking of the Titanic was in the twentieth. In 1819 the Essex left Nantucket for the South Pacific with 20 crew members aboard. In the middle of the South Pacific the ship was rammed and sunk by an angry sperm whale. The crew drifted for more than 90 days in three tiny whaleboats, succumbing to weather, hunger, and disease and ultimately turning to drastic measures in the fight for survival.

The real-life inspiration for Moby Dick. A way to connect to history through the people who lived it! Philbrick is a master of his craft! I'm a bit heartbroken that I have none of his works left to read. I'm eagerly awaiting the next release.

Story
In his first book of history, Away Off Shore, New York Times best-selling author Nathaniel Philbrick reveals the people and the stories behind what was once the whaling capital of the world. Beyond its charm, quaint local traditions, and whaling yarns, Philbrick explores the origins of Nantucket in this comprehensive history. From the English settlers who thought they were purchasing a "Native American ghost town" but actually found a fully realized society, the story of Nantucket is a truly unique chapter of American history.

Philbrick is a God!
Reviewed: 01-25-24
This book marks the official end of my Nathaniel Philbrick journey. I have officially read or listened to everything he has ever written. As Massachusetts native, I find it very easy to connect to much of his work; this is no exception. The man has a way of drawing you into the story, like very few other authors can do.
As a history lover and a local, this title was Devine, I was already familiar with the subject matter, having spent time on the islands myself, but I really appreciate the depth of the characters (are they characters if they were real?) and the ability to truly understand the history of Nantucket from the people who lived there in it's heyday!
I did read them out of order, so I'm a little sad that I don't know what's next, having already read his latest release.
