Story
A fascinating account of the world’s most famous disease - polio - told as you have never heard it before. Epidemics of paralysis began to rage in the early 1900s, seemingly out of nowhere. Doctors, parents, and health officials were at a loss to explain why this formerly unheard-of disease began paralyzing so many children. Why did this disease start to become such a horrible problem during the late 1800s? Why did it affect children more often than adults? Why was it originally called teething paralysis by mothers and their doctors?

Eye-opening about what really eradicated polio
Reviewed: 01-03-24
I didn't know much about polio going in, so most of the story was completely new to me. The book really laid it out well, although the virus is more complex than most people probably realize. That means the story can seem complex at times, but there's a little way around that.
My biggest takeaway is that the vaccine wasn't what knocked out polio. The virus had largely run its course, and most of the causes were apparently man-made.
Good handling of a complex history.

The world’s greatest bodybuilder. The world’s highest-paid movie star. The leader of the world’s sixth-largest economy. That these are the same person sounds like the setup to a joke, but this is no joke. This is Arnold Schwarzenegger. And this did not happen by accident. Arnold’s stratospheric success happened as part of a process. As the result of clear vision, big thinking, hard work, direct communication, resilient problem-solving, open-minded curiosity, and a commitment to giving back. All of it guided by the one lesson Arnold’s father hammered into him above all: be useful.

A quick read but a lot of state politics
Reviewed: 01-01-24
Love hearing this book read by the author himself. A lot of entertaining moments. Nothing really new here, but good reminders about setting priorities in life and what is really important.
The major distractions for me were the frequent references to the author's campaign for and Service as California state governor. I might have appreciated this more if I was a California resident, but most of that didn't resonate with me. And it was at least half the book.

Story
Shortly after losing all of his wealth in a terrible 1884 swindle, Ulysses S. Grant learned he had terminal throat and mouth cancer. Destitute and dying, Grant began to write his memoirs to save his family from permanent financial ruin. As Grant continued his work, suffering increasing pain, the American public became aware of this race between Grant's writing and his fatal illness. Twenty years after his respectful and magnanimous demeanor toward Robert E. Lee at Appomattox, people in the North and the South came to know Grant, now using his famous determination in this final effort.

Good but meanders

Overall I liked this book, as it gave me a fresh perspective on grant. Even though it's about his "final victory" the story travels back-and-forth in time so you get a good sense of the man.
The only drawback I found distracting at times was How the narrative would wander into certain less interesting areas, and remain there for quite some time. For example, there is a lot of time spent on parade formations and how they looked. Great detail is given on the formations of bystanders and how they applauded and showed support.
Otherwise, it was time well spent and I learned several things I didn't know about Grant.

Story
Sometimes you slip through the cracks: unforeseen circumstances like an abrupt illness, the death of a loved one, a breakup, or a job loss can derail a life. These periods of dislocation can be lonely and unexpected. For May, her husband fell ill, her son stopped attending school, and her own medical issues led her to leave a demanding job. Wintering explores how she not only endured this painful time, but embraced the singular opportunities it offered. Ultimately Wintering invites us to change how we relate to our own fallow times.

For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare--poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. A book about running races and pushing through injury
Reviewed: 12-07-23
I found the first couple chapters riveting, but after that it went downhill. It's mostly a compilation of the authors many challenging races. How he prepared, how he felt, his injuries, and how he got past them.
