Good Story, Terrible Narrator
Reviewed: 11-17-22
I stuck it out despite wanting to toss it many times during the first few hours.
The story itself was quite enjoyable but the Narrator made this almost unbearable. Every single time she attempted a French word or tried for a decent accent it became cringe worthy.

Could have been Great
Reviewed: 05-13-22
The story was superb, the writing and plot will presented. This could have been a great read except for the narration. The narrator, with her often breathy and overly dramatic performance made for a very difficult listen. I think a better and more appropriate narrator would have easily earned this a 5 star rating.

Decent enough for what it is. Horrible narration
Reviewed: 02-23-22
I'm about halfway through this book and ready to shut it down. The story is decent enough if you take it for what it is... A fluff piece.
But, the sing-song, whiney, whispery narration is driving me crazy. I'll try a bit longer but the narration is horrible.

Only Good

I enjoyed the story but, getting beyond the narrator was terribly challenging. She was definitely not right for the story. The melodramatic voice was grating. Had to power through the book after stopping and considering its return, several times. In the end, the story trumped the terrible narration.

I wanted to like him...

I really wanted to like this book and the main character. As much as I tried I could not get past his self promotion and absorption. Perhaps, in life he wasn't but, he comes across as an pompous, egotistical, self important man. He doesn't seem like someone I would have wanted to meet unlike most of the true heros about whom I've read and researched, including those who served in my own family.

I really rather enjoyed this book with one caveat. I really wanted to like Genevieve but, found her to be annoying and petulant. Her emotional issues aside, I simply did not find myself drawn into caring about her or her wellbeing.

Story
In September, 1939, George Lucius Salton's boyhood in Tyczyn, Poland, was shattered by escalating violence and terror under German occupation. His father, a lawyer, was forbidden to work, but 11-year-old George dug potatoes, split wood, and resourcefully helped his family. They suffered hunger and deprivation, a forced march to the Rzeszow ghetto, then eternal separation when 14-year-old George and his brother were left behind to labor in work camps while their parents were deported in boxcars to die in Belzec. For the next three years, George slaved and barely survived in 10 concentration camps.
