loved the heroine...a real woman!
Reviewed: 05-22-24
I loved this one..first Carmen Rose is hard to beat ...she's basically my favorite voice actor...second I loved the heroine of the story...she's lively, self-reliant, clever, witty, and a strong capable woman as a real woman would be... none of that neuroticism, spinelessness and whinning that so many romance novels' heroines have. The plot is entertaining and even funny at times...but also emotional, romantic and sexy!

Not your usual romance story
Reviewed: 05-22-24
This is not so much a romance novel but a story of self discovery in the background of a love story ...definitely not the usual plot...at times very emotional...at times a bit slow...the plot focused more on each individual and other topics, racism, child abduction, family, death, rather than the love and sex.
The narrator was ok...had a slightly annoying rhythm...I think with a better voice actor this book could be superb...as is it was grating and boring at times..but overall good.

Not my favorite characters but writing just as good

I wasn't a fan of either h/h. She's constantly martyring herself saying that everything is her fault and he's constantly shifting all the blame on her....I'd say "you're a man...take responsibility for your own actions...its called accountability, buddy"... he's also insulted her quite deeply several times and never apologized for it...more so she tought it was her fault! what? Also it seems to the end there wasn't really much trust between them and all of a sudden it's HEA... There's more details I could go on but I will just say not my favorite couple...liked previous much better....
Overall, the writing is good and very sensual and the narrator does a great job delivering the sizzle (if you don't mind the numerous mispronounciations....which don't bug me personally)

Finally an author that does both: hot sex AND quality writing!
The story is deep and emotional and full of real life darkness and disappointment and emotional anguish...the heroine doesn't get saved completely unscathed, where the hero magically times it just right before any harm gets done to her.... there's actually a lot of realism to the story which I quite enjoyed. The male H is flawed and damaged but still has a strong character and is not a sleazball (like so many "rakes" in other HR novels), the female H is a strong and reserved woman with the "balls" of steel, who is not neurotic like so many heroines of other romance novels, she doesn't blabber and have unrealistic expectations and she actually has intelligent thoughts in her head. Even though the "hero" treats her quite poorly, she doesn't just take it, she stands up for herself and fights back. I like how she has the power of him and seduces him instead of so many novels always have these semi-rapey scenes of sleazy hero seducing the naive heroine! Go girl!!!
If you like a flowery happy-all-around fairytale style romance, this one is not for you...it is not for young adults or people with immature or naive view of life, this book is on heavier side with cruel realities of life and some twisted scenes. Being in my mid thirties, I actually loved this book as I am so tired of reading brainless, vapid, stupid romances that are boring and immature. This book makes you FEEL, it has good emotional drama and stimulating sex scenes and even some kinky sex (but done so skillfully that you can either enjoy it if you're into it or write it off as disgusting villains doing gross things as villians meant to do). Bravo!
I will definitely be reading more of Ms. Evans' books!

immature and shallow
Reviewed: 03-05-24
This book is a little better than the first (that was just a waste of my brain cells) ...the plot and emotional drama got a tiiiny bit better but still every character in this book is shallow and vapid and to be honest a waste of human space and resources... most of conversations are boring and pointless and I don't find anyone likeable and didn't care what actually happens to them....very unpleasant and shallow people. The overall writing style is very immature and has no real depth ...the author isn't good enough to make you FEEL what the characters are feeling and going through...it all just "blah blah blah" ... maybe being in my 30s I'm just too old for it.
I listened to these books for the hot sex scenes and in this book it was very tame and brief ...so I was disappointed....I will not continue with the series for the sex because I cannot make it through the stupidity of the rest of the scenes... perhaps I would buy Katee's books...if she took all these books and just left the sex scenes and made it into erotica compilation...otherwise I'm done ...

sexy cat and mouse game...sizzle sizzle...fizzle
Reviewed: 02-14-24
The delicious seduction was tantalizing...made even more so by the sexy "male" voice of Xe Sands (her male voice is positively delicious). I liked the battle of wills and the fact that the heroine wasn't a spineless mouse... but a strong outspoken woman. The hero's seduction was pretty intense..not just subtle innuendos...(in the modern and real world it would definitely equate to workplace sexual harrassment... but in the fantasy world of historical romance it's quite sexy 😆) I think the heroine could use a bit more "balls" in her resistance but overall I enjoyed the power balance.
The prelude to sex was great... the sex itself... eehh..ok.... but the quality of the writing was very good and I felt very engaged ...Definitely NOT one of those brainless two-dime store romances ...really well written dialogue..especially the seduction ...both characters have some clever witty lines I chuckled at.
One thing that lost this story a star was the mangled ending... there was no emotional resolution, no heartfelt declarations or dramatic dialogue ...which after such a charged story development felt flat and unsatisfying... all of a sudden its "BAM... I love you, marriage, happy ever after? where's the struggle? where's the transition...from: he is a debauched rake who promised he'll never marry again and is just seducing her for sport... to: I love you and marriage? felt like author just got tired towards the end... which is sad cuz I was really looking to a delicious resolution to match the delicious plot.. oh well..still def worth a credit!

I made it to about an hour before the end but that's it...can't listen to another minute....if I hear even 1 more time this 24 yo adult cry out "mummy" and "daddy" ...or another character say how much they love and adore the heroine and what an amazing person she is....im going to actually barf! this book is NOT for adults with any kind of intelligence or maturity. .. (and don't get me wrong...I love a sexy romance as much as next girl) ...but this is just dumb! I'm at the point where reading it actually makes me angry...so I do not finish this one...
