Story
In this classic work of economic history and social theory, Karl Polanyi analyzes the economic and social changes brought about by the great transformation of the Industrial Revolution. His analysis explains not only the deficiencies of the self-regulating market, but the potentially dire social consequences of untempered market capitalism. New introductory material reveals the renewed importance of Polanyi's seminal analysis in an era of globalization and free trade.

Story
I have always been a soldier. I have known no other life. So begins Alexander’s extraordinary confession on the eve of his greatest crisis of leadership. By turns heroic and calculating, compassionate and utterly merciless, Alexander recounts with a warrior’s unflinching eye for detail the blood, the terror, and the tactics of his greatest battlefield victories.

Not great
Reviewed: 04-03-24
I struggled to finish this audiobook. I am not huge John Lee fan, but beyond that, the book presented a very narrow picture of Alexander’s conquest; camp intrigue. I found it less entertaining than a standard history of Alexander, which is generally my bar for historical fiction.

Story
The Devil comes to Moscow, but he isn't all bad; Pontius Pilate sentences a charismatic leader to his death, but yearns for redemption; and a writer tries to destroy his greatest tale, but discovers that manuscripts don't burn. Multi-layered and entrancing, blending sharp satire with glorious fantasy, The Master and Margarita is ceaselessly inventive and profoundly moving. In its imaginative freedom and raising of eternal human concerns, it is one of the world's great novels.

Story
Over two millennia ago, the prescient insights of Anaximander paved the way for cosmology, physics, geography, meteorology, and biology, setting in motion a new way of seeing the world. His legacy includes the revolutionary ideas that the Earth floats in a void, that animals evolved, that the world can be understood in natural rather than supernatural terms, and that universal laws govern all phenomena. In this elegant work, the renowned theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli brings to light the importance of Anaximander’s overlooked influence on modern science

I love Helgoland by Carlo Rovelli. I can see how it might have been pitched as “Helgoland but with anaximannder”. in the end, the premise that he puts forth in the beginning, that there is some value to a modern scientist vs. a historian telling the story fails to hold.

Story
For most of human history the world was a magical and enchanted place ruled by forces beyond our understanding. The rise of science and Descartes's division of mind from world made materialism our ruling paradigm, in the process asking whether our own consciousness—i.e., souls—might be illusions. Now the inexorable rise of technology, with artificial intelligences that surpass our comprehension and control, and the spread of digital metaphors for self-understanding, the core questions of existence urgently require rethinking.

An extremely enjoyable listen, perfect for audio. I would love a second edition or a extended edition that presented the authors thoughts on interacting with the most recent advances in the field of artificial intelligence. We start to see that in the final story and I look forward to seeing more!

This was a passably enjoyable listen. The characters are pretty flat. Although there is some change of perspective doesn’t really do much through the story characterization of the Gauls is completely absent.

He said, she said
Reviewed: 07-16-23
This book may have potential, however, the Audible version is quite difficult to listen to because the narrator constantly reads “he said” and “she said” clauses. It’s too bad because the narrator does voices which provide sufficient discrimination between the different speakers.
I’m not sure who is responsible for telling the narrator to not read these clauses, but it seems such an easy fix to improve the Audible version for an editor to go in and remove 90% of these superfluities.
