Story
When Finlay Ashowan joins the staff of the King and Queen of Daxaria, he’s an enigma. No one knows where he comes from or how he came to be where he is, which suits Fin just fine. He’s satisfied simply serving as the royal cook, keeping nosy passersby out of his kitchen, and concocting some truly uncanny meals. But Fin’s secret identity doesn’t stay hidden for long. After all, it’s not every day a house witch and his kitten familiar, Kraken, take to meddling in imperial affairs.

I have recently fallen in love with the cozy romantic fantasy genre niche and this is a perfect version. I highly recommend it! Disclaimer: this audiobook does have a small side effect of making you laugh out loud which can be awkward when driving alone.

Phex is a barista on a forgotten moon. Which is fine – he likes being ignored and he’s good at making drinks. Until one day an alien hears him singing and recruits him to become a god. Now Phex is thrust headfirst into the galaxy’s most cutthroat entertainment industry, where music is visible, the price of fame can kill, and the only friends he has want to be worshiped.

I have rapidly become obsessed with this series. I got another of Gail Carriger’s books in this universe (”5th Gender”) and fell deeply in love. After reading this series, I worry no other will ever measure up to it. This is one of the most beautiful depictions of music, art, found family, loss, and love. I have listened to the entire series 3 times since I first got it, because I can't move on. Talk about Godfix! I hope she writes more in this universe because I am so emotionally attached to it. You won't regret reading it. (At least I can't imagine why.) Recommending it to all my friends. A universe to sink into.

Story
Phex and his pantheon have become demigods and are taking their show on a galaxy-wide tour. Phex is shockingly good at singing but his voice is intoxicating and one wrong note can kill so everyone wants a piece of him - sometimes literally. But the aliens in charge of the divinity are hiding something even more sinister and it’s hurting performers and audiences alike. When his lover is pitted against his pantheon, Phex will have to choose between the family he has found and the god he adores.

I cannot express my love for this book and series highly enough. I have so far enjoyed all of Carriger’s work that I have read, but this series in particular has hit home in a way that has currently rendered me useless for other books. I am on my second listen, and keep renewing the books at the library just so I don’t have to return them. Obviously I will be needing to purchase the series. I cannot stop begging my friends to read or listen to the books just so I can share this with them.
Moving on to be actually useful.
Gorgeous writing. Brilliant story. And delicious narration. I have caught myself giggling in my car while listening because of a funny moment on more than one occasion. This has quickly become one of my favorite series, and I read quite a lot.

More Please!
Reviewed: 03-12-24
This book is funny, heartbreaking, and consistently, oddly, relatable. I love the characters. I love the world. I want more, so yes, please give me more of this place, where frankly more than just the aliens are alien! It all is, and it all is incredible. With mysteries, so often there is a feeling of challenge—can you figure out whodunit before the detective knows? and in this book it felt irrelevant. Because the mystery—despite being the plot—was at the same time, no more interesting than the characters. Less, even for me. I wanted to know Tris’s responses to whodunit more than the actual answer. The characters and the hints of there being so much more that I can't see are what caught me up.
Yes. More please. I need more.
On a narration note, I had read the book in print prior to listening to it, and was somewhat startled by the choice to make Tris more… posh? I guess would be the word, when I had pictured him so much sillier, but props because it absolutely works and the narration overall is just stupendous.

There are balls to attend, fashions to follow, marriages to consider, and, of course, the tiny complication of existing in a world swarming with fairy spirits, interfering deities, and actual straight-up sorcerers.

I love Alexis Hall’s work, so I couldn’t wait to read this book, but I still have to admit that it somehow surpassed my expectations thoroughly. Incredible and distinct characters, a wild plot, clever humor that led to me laughing out loud multiple times while driving by myself… and a narrator that is stupendous. I refer to both the in-book narrator, and the Nneka Okoye who absolutely nailed this performance. Even the best book can be ruined by a poor narrator, and the worst book improved by a great one. This was the best book, and a great one.
Magic across the board.

Only when their families reconnect, years after the war, does Viola learn how deep that loss truly was. Shattered without her, Gracewood has retreated so far into grief that Viola barely recognizes her old friend in the lonely, brooding man he has become.

This is one of my favorite books I’ve stumbled on. We need more like THIS. More books about us, written by people who GET us. I love that I showed the blurb to my wife and had to *explain* why it was important. I love that the narrator was clearly chosen with great thought. I love the humor and genuineness of this book. I love the characters and the hope I have for sequels. Do yourself a favor y’all, and read this.

I can’t believe I’ve never written a review for Trickster’s Choice! It’s been a favorite of mine since the days I would check it out from the library (on cassette tape) and take it on road trips with my family.
This is one of my favorite comfort audiobooks and easily the series I’ve listened to more than any other. When I am sad and don’t want to be in my head, this is where I turn.
Pierce’s characters are solid and have held up well over time. Trini Alvarado is one of my favorite narrators and the genius of having her narrate the Alanna books and the Aly books is not lost on me.
This story is alive and close enough to touch. I can smell the food, and feel the stone of the keep. I am never bored in the Copper Isles with Aly, and you won’t be either.

Story
Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

I never knew I needed a book about lesbians, necromancy, and space, but apparently I did. I consider it extremely good, which is very rude as I now want to read more and I am offended that it’s not available. Narration was incredible, writing was incredible, and story was definitely incredible. Recommending this literally everywhere.
