A deft effort at presenting critical world history

The authors did an excellent job of researching historical evidence and presented a record of the incredible teamwork that went into the United States’ effort to end World War II. This truly was America’s “greatest generation” at work. President Truman’s decision to drop the atom bomb is considered controversial, but there can be no doubt his difficult decision was the right call. Japan’s military-run government showed no inclination to surrender, which ultimately would’ve saved lives. The Allied forces made numerous efforts to warn the Japanese people, but government officials refused to capitulate in any way. This book does an excellent job of telling the story from several divergent perspectives. History is not supposed to be pleasant or make us feel better. It is a telling of fact. War is indeed hell, it is often difficult to look at objectively, as our human feelings come out. Yet it is incredibly important that history be reported fairly and objectively. If we shield our eyes and run from it, the world will absolutely repeat itself.

There has never been a better biography. I have always been a history buff with particular interest in the Civil War, I looked forward to reading/listening to this book and was not only impressed but inspired by it. He surely is the most underrated President in American history.

Great book, good performance, wonderful details and insights into the life of a truly amazing man. TR’s unquenchable desire for adventure was the stuff they make movies about. His inner strength, integrity and discipline are examples of a “man’s man.” If even a quarter of the stories are true, the man must’ve been one helluva leader and POTUS.

This book is remarkably compelling in several ways. It is beautifully written and well planned. The author did not skimp on research, that’s for sure! And the narration is excellent as well.

Anyone who is planning to give it a listen needs to be prepared to be moved with almost every story told. It’s a thrill ride, but the subject matter is serious and powerful.

This book is an excellent example of what nonfiction writing is supposed to be about. It took a story many of us knew and delivers deep insight though dogged research and great writing. Coffey delivers great storytelling by not overwriting, I read he shows his writing chops by simply hitting the right tone through the highs and lows. As for the narration, I’ve heard him do other books and he was very good. For this book, however, he was not right. He mispronounced names (albeit difficult ones) and sometimes got in the way of the story. It just wasn’t his milieux.

This book is a keeper! One to be enjoyed more than once. True, there are at times many detailed passages to work through. And yet there is no denying the payoff of brilliant storytelling throughout the book, particularly in its final chapters. There are many heart-pounding and anxious moments that keep the listener satisfyingly on edge. It is an easy listen, but also a powerful look into the human experience.
