Story
When four old University friends set off into the Scandinavian wilderness of the Arctic Circle, they aim to briefly escape the problems of their lives and reconnect with one another. But when Luke, the only man still single and living a precarious existence, finds he has little left in common with his well-heeled friends, tensions rise. With limited experience between them, a shortcut meant to ease their hike turns into a nightmare scenario that could cost them their lives. Lost, hungry, and surrounded by forest untouched for millennia, Luke figures things couldn't possibly get any worse.

With Kafka on the Shore, Haruki Murakami gives us a novel every bit as ambitious and expansive as The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, which has been acclaimed both here and around the world for its uncommon ambition and achievement, and whose still-growing popularity suggests that it will be read and admired for decades to come.

I wasted 19 hours on this, waiting for something profound. I never found it. Very strange book, and I don't understand all the positive reviews. Just not my cup of tea, I guess.

Story
Prodigal Summer weaves together three stories of human love within a larger tapestry of lives in southern Appalachia. At the heart of these intertwined narratives is a den of coyotes that have recently migrated into the region. Deanna Wolfe, a reclusive wildlife biologist, watches them from an isolated mountain cabin where she is caught off-guard by Eddie Bondo, a young hunter who comes to invade her most private spaces and her solitary life.

Kingsolver is a talented writer. She did a wonderful job of character development. My problem with the book is the constant preaching. She spends the first few chapters climbing onto her soapbox and the rest of the book preaching from it. She becomes a broken record talking about insecticides, religion, hunting, and the evils of people being people. The point was made early, but she can't let it go, and it becomes predictable and irritating as each character repeats the same narrative. Very disappointed.

Some torture scenes were tough to listen to but overall this was a fantastic book and I will be looking at more from this author.
