I really enjoyed this book. I first purchased it about 5 years ago after ending a relationship with a sociopath. It wasn’t until I underwent much therapy, was I able to read this book. It was the same way with the book “Dirty John.” Both stories were eerily similar to mine. I empathize with both victims.
It took much courage for this victim to come forward. I’ve no doubt she encountered even more abuse from the sociopathic ex. They aren’t satisfied until they’ve completely stripped you of your confidence and self worth. They will leave you feeling worthless, stupid, and hopeless. It is encouraging to see victims open up about their destructive relationships with sociopaths. Unfortunately, much of society doesn’t pay attention unless the sociopath or psychopath is a serial rapist or killer.
The truth about sociopaths and psychopaths and many narcissists is that the manipulation is what makes them so dangerous. And the lack of empathy of course, which allows them to hurt others for enjoyment.
My heart goes out to this victim. I hope she has since healed from the nightmare she believed was a marriage.

Truth IS Stranger Than Fiction

I was not aware that Ann Rule passed away. This saddens me, and my condolences go out to her daughter, Leslie, who is a phenomenal true-crime author incidentally, and other family. This is the first book I’ve read by Leslie Rule, and I wasn’t disappointed.
This story is so bizarre that I might have believed it were fiction without clear and convincing evidence of reality. Unfortunately, law enforcement is often closed-minded when it comes to the unexplainable. If they can’t see, hear, or touch it, they don’t believe it. This culture needs to change because I too had my phone and computer hacked by an ex, who sent images from my phone number and messages to other people claiming to be me so that people would be angry with me and help him stalk me. I never could get any proof because I’m not a computer hacker. Unfortunately, the police thought I was crazy. The police chief so much as told me that nobody was “smart enough” to do this “around here.” First misconception—one does not have to be smart to clone a cellphone’s SIM card. I found proof of the software programs he was using on a portable USB drive. The cops weren’t interested. Thank God he didn’t kill me, but I live in fear daily, and likely always will. When you’re in an intimate relationship with someone, they have access to your device specifications. Windows stores all of our passwords, as do our cellphones. I often had my ex find my passwords for me when I’d forgotten them. So what about my police complaints was so far-fetched? I don’t think any amount of police intervention could have saved Cari, but there are plenty of cases in which it could have prevented a murder.
My heart goes out to Cari’s family. Dave, he’s just an idiot whose only concern is who he will sleep with tonight. He had such tunnel vision about not being “trapped” that he couldn’t see the forest for the trees. How in the world did he not have a clue as to what was happening RIGHT UNDER HIS NOSE? Because he is totally self-absorbed. Personally, I don’t know what either woman saw in him.
Great job authoring this book. I was immediately caught up in the story and it held my attention until the very end.

This could have been a fiction writing, but for the truth between the pages. I won’t waste much effort on Alex. My concern lies with, and my heart goes out to his son Buster who, in the span of a little over a year, lost his mother, brother, grandfather, father, and grandmother. I’m amazed this young man has managed to keep it together. The one thing I disagree with is the reference in this book to Alex being a sociopath. I don’t believe he’s a sociopath, however I do believe he’s a psychopath. He was born a psychopath, and he will die a psychopath. Heartfelt prayers to Maggie’s family also. I pray that they will be there for Buster. I wouldn’t wish this predicament on my worst enemy. A family whose motto still demands unconditional loyalty forces Buster to remain in allegiance at his father’s side. A father he surely believes is guilty of the worst type of murder…filicide. This man thought he was God. He appointed himself judge, jury, and executioner over anyone from whom he could benefit. People are disposable to Alex if it means saving his ass.
Buster is extremely lucky to be alive. I hope he gets counseling and is able to heal, at least to get to some sense of normalcy. I also pray Buster succeeds in whatever it is he decides to pursue career-wise. He has what his father lacks…empathy, compassion, remorse. These are the most admirable traits a man can possess. Afterall, Alex is a prime example of the extent to which a psychopathic, greedy man will go to avoid accountability.
God Bless

I’ve read several of Phelps’ true-crime books and was pleased…until now. This story is difficult to follow. One minute, she’s married to John and doing or saying something involving him, and the next minute we’re talking about when she was with Michael. I had to go back and read other reviews just to be sure it wasn’t my lack of attention or understanding that caused my opinions. Fantastic author, but not my favorite of his books.

This story is well written, and the storyline is easy to follow. It took me less than 24 hours to listen to this audiobook.
Because I am an empath, I experienced some of the physical anxiety Ms. Williams must have experienced during her ordeal.
I too became friends with a client turned friend I later learned is a sociopath. Soon after becoming friends with “Donna”, I felt trapped. Something about the friendship didn’t feel right, but unfortunately I ignored what my subconscious was trying to tell me.
It’s easy for people with empathy to disregard their feelings of uneasiness because it’s difficult to believe a friend is a sociopath. In fact, it’s unbelievable, so we tend to ignore our warning bells.
Ms. Williams suffered a tremendous ordeal, but something good did come out of it. Anna’s one mistake was underestimating Ms. Williams’ tenacity and determination. Anna mistook Ms. Williams’ kindness for weakness. Anna’s bad!
Ms. Williams became a target because she is empathetic, and because she is good person whose motivations are sincere.
Make no mistake about Anna. She is NOT mentally ill. Her prognosis is grim at best, and all the medication and therapy in the world will likely not affect a change in her thinking or her behavior. Because of her narcissism, Anna cannot and will not accept that anything is wrong with her. She isn’t able to show genuine empathy for anyone other than Anna, although she is able to fake short spurts of cognitive empathy to get what she wants. She will never have the ability to view any perspective but her own.
While I hate this happened to Ms. Williams, I am relieved that Anna has been forever exposed as a con-artist. If I am correct, a part of Ms. Williams feels genuine remorse for having exposed Anna.
What a fantastic story this was to say the least.

This isn’t honestly one of the best books I have ever read. Mr. Walker poured his heart and soul into this project, and my hat is off to him. I do not for one minute envy the life he has lived. Midway through the book, he makes a comment about his readers hating him, and about how his readers must to be confused about some of his motives. I disagree with that statement. I never doubted his sincerity or his motives, and I understood entirely his reasoning. It is not because I have experienced like this. It is because of the way in which he writes his story. It is truthful and deep, and if he reads this review, I want him to know that he has a genuine talent for writing and relaying his emotions in his work. This is the first book in a long while that caused me to cry, and cry I did — more than once. I cannot express enough my gratitude for Mr. Walker having shared his story because the public needs to be better educated on the traits of the sociopath. The antisocial personality can be quite dangerous, and it is virtually impossible to distinguish the antisocial personality from the “normal” personality. Statistics will have us believe that 4 out of 100 people are sociopathic, but I believe this figure should be closer to 6 or 7 out of 100. Personally, I have known 4 throughout my lifetime, one being a relative, one being a coworker, one being a romantic partner, and one being a friend (former). They are among the people we encounter in everyday situations, and Mr. Walker does a wonderful job describing the extent to which a sociopath will go to get what he or she wants. There is no doubt in my mind that the main character in this book is a sociopath, a master manipulator, and that she raised her second child to be a sociopath. Throughout parts of the books, I realized that I was intrigued by her, and eerily throughout other parts of the books, I found myself liking her or having pity on her.
I highly recommend reading Mr. Walker’s life story. You will not be able to put down this book!
