A great blend of history and modern spiritual practices, but not as accurate with the folklore as I would prefer.

Every so often, p encounters a book like this that holds up a mirror to the soul. The lyrical prose, so beautifully complements the storyline and the characterization of Corrag. I feel as if she is a piece of me. The experience of this book was like getting to know a part of me lost in adulthood. I’m so very grateful it exists in the world and could not recommend it higher.

Arden’s authors note at the end of the book perfectly summarizes the macabre enchantment of the era, as does her story as it unfolds with beautiful horror. That said, know that there is plenty of heart and love and hope holding this poetic, historical tale together.

Story
Winter lasts most of the year at the edge of the Russian wilderness, and in the long nights, Vasilisa and her siblings love to gather by the fire to listen to their nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, Vasya loves the story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon. Wise Russians fear him, for he claims unwary souls, and they honor the spirits that protect their homes from evil. Then Vasya’s widowed father brings home a new wife from Moscow. Fiercely devout, Vasya’s stepmother forbids her family from honoring their household spirits, but Vasya fears what this may bring.

This was a wonderful overview of what we know about the people we call the Celts and how they shaped modern France, Ireland, and the British Isles. I would love it if the Great Courses offered an update of a chapter or two every few years as we learn more!
