About this listen

Living at the limits of our ordinary perception, mosses are a common but largely unnoticed element of the natural world. Gathering Moss is a beautifully written mix of science and personal reflection that invites listeners to explore and learn from the elegantly simple lives of mosses.

Robin Wall Kimmerer's audiobook is not an identification guide, nor is it a scientific treatise. Rather, it is a series of linked personal essays that will lead general listeners and scientists alike to an understanding of how mosses live and how their lives are intertwined with the lives of countless other beings, from salmon and hummingbirds to redwoods and rednecks. Kimmerer clearly and artfully explains the biology of mosses, while at the same time reflecting on what these fascinating organisms have to teach us.

Drawing on her diverse experiences as a scientist, mother, teacher, and writer of Native American heritage, Kimmerer explains the stories of mosses in scientific terms as well as in the framework of indigenous ways of knowing. In her audiobook, the natural history and cultural relationships of mosses become a powerful metaphor for ways of living in the world.

Beautifully narratated. Science and Art dance seamlessly together as the author reads her own work. Mesmerized as I am educated about the much unappreciated mosses.

More than I expected from this listen.
I've always been appreciative of moss but never truly been enlightened to their tenacity and true importance of their niche in the world.

I loved listening to Gathering Moss. It is comforting to know that there are people who devote their whole careers—their whole lives—to organisms that are so small yet so common. It is easy to overlook moss, but after starting this book I found myself looking closer and closer during my walks around the neighborhood. I especially appreciate Kimmerer’s inclusion of Native American knowledge and wisdom throughout the book. My life has been enriched, thanks to Gathering Moss.

Robin’s voice never ceases to soothe me even when she discusses the most heart wrenching destruction of Mother Earth. Poetic, Indigenous Scientific Knowledge mixed with Western Biology is the medicine she offers which we desperately need to heal our world. #supportindigenousauthors

Slow, steady, and simply beautiful just like mosses

I enjoyed this book for the very reason others may not have. They author’s voice is soft, with a nice cadence, which is very relaxing for an evening listener. The content was great and I feel the author wrote in such a way that the science was not watered down, but was still approachable to someone not in a scientific field.

Easy listening before bed
