Story
Raised in South Carolina and New York, Woodson always felt halfway home in each place. In vivid poems, she shares what it was like to grow up as an African American in the 1960s and 1970s, living with the remnants of Jim Crow and her growing awareness of the Civil Rights movement. Touching and powerful, each poem is both accessible and emotionally charged, each line a glimpse into a child's soul as she searches for her place in the world.

As a child of the South myself that was raised away from my family’s true home, I felt every bit of this story. I could listen to this over and over.

One of the best I’ve read!
Reviewed: 08-30-23
This book is one of the most compelling and moving stories I’ve read in a long time. As a black nurse myself, and one that enjoys historical fiction as well as learning about African American history, this book had everything I needed to be drawn in and forced me to read up in the facts of the actual case. The narrator made it very easy to get into the story as well. Her reading was relatable and realistic without overdoing the southern accents like so many narrators do. I will recommend this book 100 times over. What a literary gem!

Wow… just wow!

All I can say is that I lost my father about six months ago and this author was able to put into words the absolute anguish most of us usually can’t describe when we are ripped away from someone we love. The entire work was moving, raw, gripping and so familiar that it comforted me just in knowing I’m not going crazy and I’m not the only one that feels this deeply.

Healthy boundaries. We all know we should have them - in order to achieve work/life balance, cope with toxic people, and enjoy rewarding relationships with partners, friends, and family. But what do "healthy boundaries" really mean - and how can we successfully express our needs, say "no", and be assertive without offending others? Licensed counselor, sought-after relationship expert, and one of the most influential therapists on Instagram Nedra Glover Tawwab demystifies this complex topic for today's world.

First, I’m glad she narrated herself. Next, I love that the content was accessible to everyone and that she didn’t overwhelm with overly clinical terms. Finally, her lessons on boundaries… I will never be the same. I learned so much about being able to identify where the boundary breakdowns are in each of my relationships and she gets very practical in specific examples of things to say when you are trying to work through setting those boundaries and dealing with the uncomfortable feelings around those conversations. I have already recommended it to several people and I think it’s a must-have for every human walking the earth.
