Story
Dr. Marty Makary is co-developer of the life-saving checklist outlined in Atul Gawande's best-selling The Checklist Manifesto. As a busy surgeon who has worked in many of the best hospitals in the nation, he can testify to the amazing power of modern medicine to cure. But he's also been a witness to a medical culture that routinely leaves surgical sponges inside patients, amputates the wrong limbs, and overdoses children because of sloppy handwriting. Over the last 10 years, neither error rates nor costs have come down, despite scientific progress.

Story
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Interesting, sad & compelling

I loved listening to Harry tell his story. It made me feel like he was talking to me. It is sad what happened and now the relationship between Harry and his father and brother seems broken forever. It seems very hard for his father and brother to come back to Harry to admit wrongdoings and rebuild a trusting, loving family again. With so much shared in this book, hard to picture but clear Harry holds onto hope. And hope is what keeps us all going. Highly recommend!

Story
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

This is an amazing book! Full of truth, showing all the nuances of it. The parts we don’t want to see, don’t want to admit is true and that we contribute to as well as the universal humanity of it that connects us all. Beautifully written, didn’t want to put it down! Couldn’t stay away as I was sucked into the scenes, the characters, the story…made me sad, angry and hopeful too. Makes me want to change the world we are in for the better. Thank you!

In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

Amazing writer and reader - you could feel her passion, honesty, integrity and moral compass all shine through in not just the content, but in her reading. Very powerful life journey with insights and lessons that apply to all of humanity but are particularly illuminating (and painful) regarding poverty, class, race and racism, and sex and sexism. This book enables understanding and growth for readers unlike any other book I’ve read in a long time. Viola Davis is a pioneer and role model not just in her acting, but writing, producing, storytelling of the human condition, and so much more! Thank you!

Found this book long but well worth the time! Isaacson uses a methodical, clear, relatable and intriguing approach to explaining complex science and the heroes discovering and innovating in this space. In a year filled with tragedy and loss, science prevailed with COVID-19 vaccines in record time thanks to the pioneering work of Doudna and many others. They paved the way and continue to do so in creating understanding and innovation in genetics. And thanks to Isaacson the layperson can see how they do it.

Excellent evidence-based assessment of women’s health gaps
Reviewed: 06-04-21
Methodical, clear explanation of key areas where our healthcare system fails to address women’s health issues. It includes powerful statistics and stories and it is hard to walk away unmoved. To have this pattern of making medical diagnosis and care decisions based on data coming from all white male clinical trials that ignore sex differences for decades, of not teaching women’s health and sex differences in medical school, and of doctors not taking symptoms seriously when communicated by female patients continue is reprehensible. This must stop! Hope all who read feel empowered to speak up and change the system one person at a time.

Bold writer, brave woman! To share so much personal experiences, emotions and lessons learned takes guts. Reading it makes you feel human and understood. At times, some of the details about little things like how she vacuums seem unnecessary while at other times you yearn for more on the real substantive items, but overall she connects well with the reader and has wisdom to share that can help women. I recommend it!
