Historia
China is growing increasingly bellicose. From massive practice runs for an invasion of Taiwan, to deadly encroachments on the sovereign territorial waters of the Philippines, to reckless encounters at sea and in the air aimed to intimidate American and Japanese forces operating in international waters and air space, it seems war might erupt at any moment. For decades China has been "hiding its strength and biding its time" as former paramount leader Deng Xiaoping counseled. No longer. Under the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the People's Republic of China has engaged in a massive naval, air...

lacks character
Revisado: 03-02-24
Although I have 900+ titles in my library I usually don't do reviews; but this was my first experience with Virtual Voice so thought I should.
I always prefer a book read by it's author, I feel it better conveys the story.
.. Using a Virtual Voice feminine narrator for the preamble by Chuck DeVore was just a bad choice; my brain fought to reconcile what he was saying with the voice I was hearing.
.. The story was OK, but a bit flat.
.. The Virtual Voice feminine narrator for the story didn't work for me. Most characters were male so the lack of symmetry just didn't work for me.
.. Overall the Virtual Voice narration hurt the book. A good narrator improves the story; Virtual Voice added no nuance in it's read leaving the story flat.

Historia
In Hope Is not a Method, Sullivan and co-author Colonel Michael Harper tell us how they kept the army well-trained and equipped for traditional functions while preparing it for a wide range of new and complicated missions, all in the midst of a dramatic reduction in both human and financial resources. Their approach is based on continuity and change: maintaining their focus on the army's historic vision and values while introducing new problem-solving techniques and training methods.

Best book I’ve read on Management
Revisado: 10-01-23
I re-listen to this book periodically to move it’s learnings forward in my thoughts.
The mixture of management precepts bolstered by historical stories and the authors experiences weave a compelling framework for the why and how of the art of management.
The best!

Historia
Before he was the Gray Man, Court Gentry was Sierra Six, the junior member of a CIA action team. In their first mission, they took out a terrorist leader, at a terrible price. Years have passed. The Gray Man is on a simple mission when he sees a ghost: the long-dead terrorist, but he's remarkably energetic for a dead man. A decade of time hasn't changed the Gray Man. He isn't one to leave a job unfinished or a blood debt unpaid.

Historia
The year is 2018 - a highly volatile nuclear world. Israel has obliterated the deep underground nuclear weapons facility built by Iran. The United States has destroyed the nuclear facility of a defiant North Korea. The Russians have upped the stakes in the latest world power-play - cyber warfare - to reduce the US to helplessness: a three-strike missile attack on the National Security Agency at Fort Mead, Maryland, while simultaneously jamming the top-secret electronic access key to America’s nuclear launch system.

Good story but
Revisado: 11-14-21
I enjoyed the novel; but the author's love of Ireland was distracting. Ireland has been a consistently a neutral nation; I found the idea that they would allow a US base on their soil implausible,
During WW2 thousands of Allied sailors (both merchant marine and military) died because Ireland denied Allied use of their southern ports for anti submarine duty. At the end of the war they sent a delegation to express their official regrets when Hitler died; they expressed no regrets when Roosevelt died.
As a neutral this was their right; but the idea that they would change so dramatically to balance their budget was just too much.

Lieutenant-Colonel Sharpe is a man with a reputation. Born in the gutter, raised a foundling, he joined the army 21 years ago, and it’s been his home ever since. He’s a loose cannon, but his unconventional methods make him a valuable weapon. So when, the dust still settling after the Battle of Waterloo, the duke of Wellington needs a favour, he turns to Sharpe.

Like the joy of talking to an old friend
Revisado: 10-31-21
Loved reading another Sharpe novel. It fell in place like I’d read the last one days ago.
The storytelling was first rate as was the narration. Sharpe and Harper’ skill, luck, and rage got them through amazing scrapes, as always; and it was delightful to read.
One can only hope Bernard Cornwell will be able to conjure additional Sharpe stories to delight us in the future.

I stuck it out till the end, but it was a disappointment.
It felt like a bunch of individual vignettes that never really came together. I expected better from a Ludlum series.

Historia
Mexican drug cartels are shooting up the streets of Laredo and El Paso. Somali pirates are holding three U.S. tankers for ransom. The President of the United States is fed up and, as Commander in Chief, has what he thinks is a pretty bright idea — to get hold of Colonel Charley Castillo and his merry band and get them on the case. Unfortunately, that will be difficult. Everybody knows that the President hates Castillo’s guts, and has just had him forcibly retired from the military, and now Castillo’s men are scattered far and wide, many of them in hiding.

skip this book
Revisado: 05-06-14
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I'm at hour 8 of the book and the story is finally starting. All I've heard so far is back story from previous books and annoying side excursions.
What do you think your next listen will be?
I doubt anything by this author. He has gotten lazy and just generating cash for himself
How did the narrator detract from the book?
the narrator was acceptable
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Hazardous Duty?
the first 2/3; all copied from previous stories
Any additional comments?
huge dissapointment

A largely untold facet of the war on terror is the widespread outsourcing of military tasks to private mercenary companies. Accountable neither to the citizenry nor to standard military legal codes, these largely unregulated corporate armies are being entrusted with ever-greater responsibilities on behalf of the nation.

Blackwater
Revisado: 11-09-07
Very disappointing; don't waste you time.
I’d expected an objective description about Blackwater’s origins and operations but I gave up after the first hour of nothing but Bush / Republican bashing and conspiracy theory centered on the dangers of “the military / industrial complex”.
Maybe I just got tired of the author's self righteous criticisms of all things outside his own pronounced political orientation.
