Heralded as an instant classic of fantasy literature, Maguire has written a wonderfully imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view. More than just a fairy tale for adults, Wicked is a meditation on the nature of good and evil.

Feels a bit aged
Reviewed: 12-20-24
Wasn’t expecting YA so the descriptions weren’t a surprise, but the tone felt off. Perhaps the old male narrator voice didn’t help, but it feels like a books written by an old man whom women were just fantasy objects to and not real people.
Guess we’ve been spoiled by modern day female authors with their spicy scenes.

Not sure if it was a narrator decision or an author change, but it was nice to have them actually swear instead of abbreviate. Every AF or FML in book 1 took me out of the story for a second.
I guess warning to anyone who liked that aspect.

Story
My whole world changed when I stepped inside the academy. Nothing is right about this place or the other students in it. Here I am, a mere mortal among gods...or monsters. I still can't decide which of these warring factions I belong to, if I belong at all. I only know the one thing that unites them is their hatred of me. Then there's Jaxon Vega. A vampire with deadly secrets who hasn't felt anything for a hundred years.

Story
Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

Weird, but in a good way!

Only downside is so many characters were hard for me to track in my head. Audiobooks are amazing, but I wish I could have flipped back to the first chapter that named everyone. Same goes for fantasy books and no maps, but it’s a small con for the benefit of audiobooks.
I went into the book with very little information. Just saw someone recommend it on YouTube and added it to my wishlist. So it was a wild ride into the futuristic/feudal world and I loved it.
Will definitely finish the trilogy

Even better on the 2nd listen. Just got book 4 and wanted a refresher on book 3. Sometimes it’s a bit of a slog to do a reread, but I loved it even more. Now onto book4! (Preordered book 5 so I won’t miss it in August)

I have seen this recommended over and over on BookTube so finally decided to give it a shot. WOW, I can’t believe this was a first novel from an author.
I would normally dislike line setup book 1’s but I don’t care at all, I was just sad when the timer ran down to its last hour. Hopping right into book 2
