Story
Virgil Flowers kicked around for a while before joining the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. First it was the army and the military police, then the police in St. Paul, and finally Lucas Davenport brought him into the BCA, promising him, "We'll only give you the hard stuff." He's been doing the hard stuff for three years now, but never anything like this.

I loved the way the main character approached everything. He was friendly put very perceptive at the same time. The plot twists kept it interesting. I also liked his fiction writing as a way to play out possible scenarios in the real world. A good read.

In Maine, Colleen Clark stands accused of the worst crime a mother can commit: the abduction and possible murder of her child. Everyone—ambitious politicians in an election season, hardened police, ordinary folk—has an opinion on the case, and most believe she is guilty. But most is not all. Defending Colleen is the lawyer Moxie Castin, and working alongside him is the private investigator Charlie Parker, who senses the tale has another twist.

As a longtime reader of the Charlie Parker novels, I was excited when this latest installment arrived. Connolly did not disappoint. The plot was great, my favorite characters in residence and it was read by my favorite narrator, Jeff Harding. There was just the right amount of weirdness, too.

I enjoyed the story, and liked the characters. The narration was a bit jarring between the lead female character and the FBI agents. I would read another book by the author.

This book was compelling in its honest telling of a brutal yet inspiring life of two children trapped by psychotic circumstance. Add to it the Amish who’s rules are not only restricting but perpetuate child abuse, and this memoir is both appalling and captivating. You must read it to the end.

Excellent Book - Great Characters

John Connolly’s “Charlie Parker” series is a winner. This is the second book I’ve read, and the combination of hard-boiled private eye combined with slightly paranormal tendencies makes for a fast-paced, page turner that keeps you engaged to the end. The private detective, Charlie Parker, is a detective with jazz in his soul. His dry manner and the calm way he deals with fantastic events is what makes his character so likable. The secondary characters are equally well developed. I’ve never read any of Connolly’s fiction before this, but now I’m definitely hooked, and looking forward to another installment.
