I really enjoyed most of these lectures! They were eye-opening, scientific, and immediately helpful to me. Admittedly - I was disappointed by a couple speakers (namely the one covering Awe and the following person covering Water). Where previous speakers addressed and resolved sources of error in their studies, the Awe speaker seemed to me to be intellectually incestuous and to have fatally flawed data in more than one way - but he never so much as commented on it. The speaker covering water gave off a debate class vibe. I felt like he was trying to persuade me more than give clear information, and that didn’t align with the rest of the course. If this were to be revamped, I feel it would be beneficial to find a different way/speakers to incorporate the helpfulness of nature in mindfulness. Still overall an excellent course!

It felt like the writing lost a lot of skill in the last third of the book; maybe the chapters were written in a hurry? The last chapters didn’t exude nearly as much intelligence or soul. The writing became repetitive, and was not as enjoyable. Overall just okay.

Why do people dodge responsibility when things fall apart? Why the parade of public figures unable to own up when they screw up? Why the endless marital quarrels over who is right? Why can we see hypocrisy in others but not in ourselves? Are we all liars? Or do we really believe the stories we tell? Backed by years of research and delivered in lively, energetic prose, Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me) offers a fascinating explanation of self-deception.

Hoping for substance
Reviewed: 03-01-19
I read a lot of books of this sort, and I am definitely interested in the subject matter - but the writing just feels like it is lacking substance compared to the works I’ve deeply benefited from. The book bounces from story to story trying to demonstrate the ideas, but doesn’t focus enough on really driving home any of those ideas. Just goes on to another “This one time, Joe knee a guy who...” example to prove the stance. I only made it 4 hours in - but I’m done. Little value-added, and I didn’t particularly enjoy the narration either.

But as he settled his affairs, he learned that a royal warrant had been sworn out against him and that men were searching for him in every port. At issue were some rare gold coins Sackett had sold to finance his first trip to the Americas - coins believed to be part of a great treasure lost by King John years before.

Great read, and excellently read by Mr Curless! My lone critique is that Barnabas’s character is written in an overly-prophetic style, that in my opinion sometimes detracted from the story. Absolutely no other upsets. A story to dream about.

Story
"Having empathy means our heart goes out to another person in joy or pain," says Dr. Judith Orloff. "But for empaths, it goes much further. We actually feel others' emotions, energy, and physical symptoms in our own bodies, without the usual defenses that most people have." The Empath's Survival Guide is an invaluable resource for empaths who want to develop coping skills in a high-stimulus world while embracing their gifts of intuition, compassion, creativity, and spiritual connection.

Excellent with a grain of salt
Reviewed: 08-17-18
Several passages made a real difference in how I view myself and what next steps I choose in my personal growth, and it offered insight for me on how to interact with some very empathic people in my life. At the same time, there are a few fallacies and incongruent tips in here, so as with anything I’d recommend taking her words with a grain of salt. I feel like Dr Orloff had her heart in the right place, but I would recommend doing more research - no blindly making big shifts based on what you hear.
