This book kept me interested to see what happened in the end but I didn’t enjoy the narrator’s voice. It was too whispy whispery.

Gripping from beginning to end!
Reviewed: 08-05-23
This book kept my interest throughout. I don’t usually go for mysteries or thrillers but this story was gripping! Well written, well narrated, and very real. My only complaint was the “F” bomb used several times. I know it is used for emphasis and to keep the story “real” but I wish there was another word they could use to replace it.

A Classic Tale that Does Not Disappoint
Reviewed: 06-21-23
Having never read this classic tale, I listened to the Audible version and found for myself why this novel is categorized as classic literature. The plot, the characters, the descriptions are from a time so different than our modern day in that the art of conversation is so rich and robust. I loved this audio version. The narrator was a master at bringing out the richness of the characters and the story line. It transported me to a different time and place. I loved it!

The premise was fun and the characters creative. Quite fairytale-ish. It did make me want to continue to the end to find out how the conflict was resolved. I didn’t care for the narrator’s voice inflection.

I read this sweet story with my daughter when she was pre-teen age. We both loved it! Recently I listened to the Audible version and I fell in love all over again with this story! Although it is categorized as junior fiction, it is very enjoyable on an adult level. Beautifully written and narrated! Such a sweet story to enjoy and also learn from.

Amazing Storytelling of a Beautiful but Tragic Love Story
Reviewed: 01-28-23
I’ve read/listened to many books that take place during the WWII era. I found this story to be wonderfully written - Hokin is a masterful storyteller. It also lived up to its’ genre placement as historical fiction. I learned quite a bit about a few of the countries surrounding Germany and beyond and what part they played during the war years and after the war. The further I got into the story, the more it gripped me until I could hardly stop listening. The characters felt very real to me and the love story very real also. Very relatable to how we as humans communicate - the things we say and the things we wished we would have said. I highly recommend this book. P.S. I listened to the Audible version and I loved it. The narrator did an amazing job not only with the inflection in her voice but also making the men sound like men as well as the women sound like women.

They are as real to me as can be. I wish this book and this series would never end!

Wonderful Tale of the South!
Reviewed: 12-27-17
I love to hear tales of the south and this one was wonderful! The author takes us back and forth from present day to depression era times and kept me fascinated with how they intertwine and tie together eventually! This was the first book I've experienced by this author and I loved her style of writing! This is a fictional story based on a true event . I loved the prologue at the end explaining the history of this story - it compelled me to learn more about what really took place. The narration was superb! I will look for more books by this author and also books narrated by the narrators of this book.

My Second Walk Was Just As Rewarding
Reviewed: 08-01-17
I listened to this series several years ago and I loved it! I was surprised how much i enjoyed it listening to it a second time. It was like visiting old friends that have always been in my heart. Richard Paul Evans is a master at bringing a story to life. He paints such beautiful pictures in my mind but also in my heart as he describes places and human feelings. We have traveled to many of the places that are described in this series of books and it was wonderful to revisit these places with the author. I also love his narration! Who better to give emphasis and emotion where needed than the author? I think I will most likely be taking a third walk in the not-too-distant future!

Candle in the Darkness is a Beautiful Work of Art!
Reviewed: 06-04-17
By the time I was halfway through this book, I had fallen so in love with the characters that I never wanted the book to end! Thank goodness there were two other books to follow in this series! Lynn Austin has become my favorite Christian author of historical fiction. She paints such a richly beautiful picture with her style of writing that I truly get every bit as much from the way it is written as the compelling story line itself! And I learned so much about the Civil War era that it motivated me to learn more. And then there is the narrator, Christina Moore! She is amazing! The way she can glide smoothly from one character's voice to the next anr the next after that is so incredible! My husband and I listened to all 3 audible books in this series and just made it through this first book again and it was every bit as enjoyable as the first round. I highly reccommend this book and the entire series.
