Story
At age 24 Winston Churchill was utterly convinced it was his destiny to become prime minister of England one day, despite the fact he had just lost his first election campaign for Parliament. He believed that to achieve his goal, he had to do something spectacular on the battlefield. Despite deliberately putting himself in extreme danger as a British army officer in colonial wars in India and Sudan and as a journalist covering a Cuban uprising against the Spanish, glory and fame had eluded him.

Story
If you cut off a spider's leg, it's crippled; if you cut off its head, it dies. But if you cut off a starfish's leg it grows a new one, and the old leg can grow into an entirely new starfish. The Starfish and the Spider argues that organizations fall into two categories: "spiders", which have a rigid hierarchy, and "starfish", which rely on the power of peer relationships.

Pretty good book. Nothing earth shattering.

I thought this was a fairly good book. It was well thought out and engaging with many good stories and insights. The narration was good too. I didn't think book was ground breaking or an amazing resource, but a good, short book. I agree with other reviewers that it had a good deal of LinkedIn promotion, but I want put off by that since Hoffman is telling his story and knows LinkedIn can help with career research, connections, etc.

Story
Lawyers. Accountants. Software Engineers. That what Mom and Dad encouraged us to become. They were wrong. Gone is the age of "left-brain" dominance. The future belongs to a different kind of person with a different kind of mind: designers, inventors, teachers, storytellers - creative and emphatic "right-brain" thinkers whose abilities mark the fault line between who gets ahead and who doesn't.

I highly recommend this book to all. It is thought-provoking, challenging, inspiring, and entertaining. I know I will continue to stew on the concepts presented in this book for years to come. The book is just as relevant, if not more so, than when it was written. I always prefer books narrated by the book's author and this is another great example of this. I feel I understand myself and my surroundings better as a more right-brained person and will better shape my future endeavors after reading this book.

Story
Why is it so hard to make lasting changes in our companies, in our communities, and in our own lives? The primary obstacle is a conflict that's built into our brains, say Chip and Dan Heath, authors of the critically acclaimed best seller Made to Stick. Psychologists have discovered that our minds are ruled by two different systems - the rational mind and the emotional mind - that compete for control. The rational mind wants a great beach body; the emotional mind wants that Oreo cookie.

This book was okay, but I didn't love it.

The story was okay. Definitely some compelling stories in there and great nuggets of wisdom, but I wish there was more depth on the changes in some of the stories instead of just short snippets of lots of stories. In reading other reviews I was worried about the narrator, but had no issues with him. The book may need to be revised a bit; due to more recent events I didn't find the stories on the successes of BP, Lehman Brothers, and Tiger Woods all that compelling. Despite, my critiques I found the book well worth the time and audible credit.

Story
In 1518, in a small town in Alsace, Frau Troffea began dancing and didn't stop. She danced until she was carried away six days later, and soon 34 more villagers joined her. Then more. In a month more than 400 people had been stricken by the mysterious dancing plague. In late-19th-century England an eccentric gentleman founded the No Nose Club in his gracious townhome - a social club for those who had lost their noses, and other body parts, to the plague of syphilis for which there was then no cure.

Story
In his landmark best seller The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell redefined how we understand the world around us. Now, in Blink, he revolutionizes the way we understand the world within. Blink is a book about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant, in the blink of an eye, that actually aren't as simple as they seem. Why are some people brilliant decision makers, while others are consistently inept?

The world is a better place than it used to be. People are healthier, wealthier, and live longer. Yet the escapes from destitution by so many has left gaping inequalities between people and nations. In The Great Escape, Angus Deaton - one of the foremost experts on economic development and on poverty - tells the remarkable story of how, beginning 250 years ago, some parts of the world experienced sustained progress, opening up gaps and setting the stage for today's disproportionately unequal world.
