I purchased this book because I liked the prequel "Gabriel: Zero Point." However, the plot of this book was predictable and dull. I kept waiting for the next event which I could see coming well in advance. None of the protagonists was likable enough for me to root for them, and all the antagonists were stereotyped. The trope of the flawed hero with PTSD is much better done by Nora Roberts (JD Robb) in her "In Death" series. I have family members with PTSD, so I know what the real thing looks like.

I love the ongoing characters in this series. The plot of this book (Longmire in Philly) reminds me of Crocodile Dundee in NY. It stretches credibility to the limit.

I definitely plan to read the next book in the series just to find out what happens next to Walt and his followers.

The underlying mystery in this story is so convoluted that it is hard to follow. I am still not sure who ultimately committed the murder. A the same time I find the main character Alex Morrow to be so fascinating that I will probably buy the next book in the series in order to follow her story.

Readers who like a real challenging mystery that requires paying attention to every detail will probably find this book satisfying.

Disappointing plot and ending

I am one of the people who fled from Hurricane Katrina, so I was fascinated by the promise of this book. The setting of the book seemed very realistic based on my memories of the catastrophe. I was also pleased by the author's insistence on praising the great number of officers of the New Orleans Police Department who remained faithful to their duties during the disaster. The author also faithfully depicted the advantage that wealthy people had in surviving and even thriving.

Unfortunately, I also found the book a disappointment as a mystery novel. The ending stretched credibility beyond the breaking point and left me felling cheated. None of the main characters behaved in ways that were even remotely believable. I may decide to return this book in spite of my sentimental love of books set in New Orleans, especially during Katrina.

The good: The tours of Manhattan and comments on its culture are interesting and sometimes delightful.

The bad: The plots are so incredible that they detract from the enjoyment of the story.

The ugly: I am personally offended by the condescension to people like me who have to avoid caffeine for medical reasons.

I am used to saying that the movie was ok but the book was better. Not so here. The characters on TV are much better developed. What a difference a good director with good actors can make! Color me disappointed.

On the other hand, Jeff Lindsay does a great job as narrator.

This is an early (hardcover 1998 according to Amazon) work. After being used to the quality of Ms. Roberts recent novels, I was disappointed by the shallowness of the character depictions and the simplicity of the plot: neurotic protagonists vs. psychotic antagonist.

This book is not easy entertainment but is true literature with meaning and messages on several levels. It portrays the tragedy and quiet dignity of individual lives along with a healthy dose of cynical social commentary mixed with both satire and the classic whodunit mystery.
