Trust and Love
Reviewed: 11-04-24
The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, I had read several times. A couple but not all of the remaining books had I read. My daughter, as a child, read all seven books several times. Wanting to connect with something that had meant a lot to her in her childhood, I set a goal to listen to all the books of Narnia. I hadn’t realized there had been so many battles fought. Getting to know the characters, people and animals, was delightful. I’m glad I experienced this adventureous story and have given thought to the subtleties written into the story of Narnia by C. S. Lewis.

Story
Lewis Madigan is young, gay, out of work, and getting antsy when he’s roped into providing end-of-life care for his insufferable homophobic neighbor, Chester Wheeler. Lewis doesn’t need the aggravation, just the money. The only requirements: run errands, be on call, and put up with a miserable old churl no one else in Buffalo can bear. After exchanging barbs, bickering, baiting, and pushing buttons, Chester hits Lewis with the big ask. Lewis can’t say no to a dying wish.

None of us know how our life will end. The stories of Chester and Estelle are sad and heartwarming. Experiences and circumstances can create a very cantankerous individual. The care, attention, and understanding of a loving person can ignite the lovable humanity in lonely, hurting people.

Story
Mrs. Sookie Poole of Point Clear, Alabama, has just married off the last of her daughters and is looking forward to relaxing and perhaps traveling with her husband, Earle. The only thing left to contend with is her mother, the formidable Lenore Simmons Krackenberry. Lenore may be a lot of fun for other people, but is, for the most part, an overbearing presence for her daughter. Then one day, quite by accident, Sookie discovers a secret about her mother's past that knocks her for a loop and suddenly calls into question everything she ever thought she knew about herself, her family, and her future.

Robinson tells the story of John Ames Boughton, the prodigal son of Gilead’s Presbyterian minister, and his romance with Della Miles, a high-school teacher who is also the child of a preacher. Their deeply felt, tormented, star-crossed interracial romance resonates with all the paradoxes of American life, then and now.

Married Love
Reviewed: 08-15-22
This is a beautiful story of the birth and growth of ‘married love.’ I liked seeing Rev. Ames from another point of view. The impression I got of him in “Home” was a of a judicial, distant, and a low level of caring person. The opposites of these three characteristics were evident in the story of “Lila.” I look forward to reading “Jack.”
