About this listen

From an exciting new voice in WWII historical fiction comes a tale of love, loss and a betrayal that echoes through generations…

Paris, 1940: War is closing in on the city of love. With his wife forced into hiding, Jacques must stand by and watch as the Nazis take away everything he holds dear. Everything except his last beacon of hope: his beloved bookshop, La Page Cachée.

But when a young woman and her child knock on his door one night and beg for refuge, he knows his only option is to risk it all once more to save a life…

Modern day: Juliette and her husband have finally made it to France on the romantic getaway of her dreams – but as the days pass, all she discovers is quite how far they’ve grown apart. She’s craving a new adventure, so when she happens across a tiny, abandoned shop with a for-sale sign in the window, it feels fated.

And she’s about to learn that the forgotten bookshop hides a lot more than meets the eye…

A heartbreaking tale of love and loss in war, perfect for fans of Kate Quinn and Jennifer Chiaverini.

Never forgotten

I enjoyed the linking of the past & current by the author as well as understanding what it could have been like in Paris during WWII. I thought the narration was well done and supported the time switches as sometimes when this type of book is listened to it can be confusing. The book provides some balance of very dark and better times.

Great Fictional Truth

I was swept up from the very beginning with this novel. It is a good writer who has us directing a “movie” right inside our minds as the words are spoken. This story touches all our senses, without taking us too far over that horrific abyss that is war. Kudos to the writer for creating a historical novel that is quite believable.

Better as two books.....

I enjoyed each timeline, however, I think this book would have been better focusing on only one point in time and that preferably being the WW2 story. I

Great story

I enjoyed both story lines, though would have liked more information about the characters in each timeline. Narration was good, not great.

A very poignant and sweet story

The characters were very real, and l found it interesting how they, in their average everyday existence, found ways to be courageous and brave beyond their own fears and everyday concerns. I was reminded of the thousands of real unsung heroes and their forgotten stories that we’ll never know about or read about as they are lost to time. While this isn’t a true life story, I have no doubt that the selfless and courageous exploits written could’ve been very real examples of those committed and experienced during WWII. It warms my heart to think that such people existed back then and made such deep sacrifices and saved the world. I would like to believe that there are as many unsung hero’s today in the many places worldwide caught up in war.
I enjoyed the two different stories, one in the past and one present day and how they were leading to a connection.
The ending to this book was just perfect and I felt uplifted despite the sad outcome that was also revealed. Enjoyed it lounging poolside.

Terrible Narrator

I haven’t finished this book and may not. There are two narrators in this book, one for each of the eras represented. The female narrator is terrible! She reminds me of a student first learning to read. There are pauses when there shouldn’t be; she rushes through words without any inflection; she doesn’t put emphasis on the right words. I feel like I have spent more time trying to figure out what she is trying to say than I have enjoying the book. The story itself, so far, has been interesting enough but I’m struggling to enjoy it whenever she is speaking.
