    Welcome to the Voices for Voices (VfV) Podcast, where we discuss the triumphs and challenges of real mental health journeys. We give ordinary people a platform on which to share their unique perspectives about living with disabilities, experiences in healing and thriving with mental illness, and more.

    Our mission is to provide educational materials, workshops, and seminars designed to assist individuals with mental health, career advancement, and practical solutions to help manage workplace issues.

    Our vision is to make mental health a non-negotiable priority for people everywhere coupled with long-term career development to become a healthy and productive member of society.

    In this episode, Justin Alan Hayes interviews Heidi Larew, LPCC-S, LIDC-CS, ATCS Art Therapy Certified Supervisor from the HELMS Foundation and Alta Care Group. Heidi Larew, LPCC-S, LICDC-CS, ATCS began working with the HELMS Foundation and Alta Care Group in the summer of 2019. With prior experience as an Ursuline college thesis editor and adjunct faculty, and clinical supervisor across disciplines, she has promoted the development of art therapy in Mahoning Valley. Having served on the Buckeye Art Therapy Association board of directors gave her an edge to understanding connections in the art therapy community.

    During the COVID-19 pandemic, Heidi adapted to virtual program development while also completing a book chapter to further serve clinicians working with individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.

    Over the past two years, she has welcomed seven art therapy clinicians, either interns or art therapists, to join in the promotion of art therapy in our community. Her emphasis is on creatively connecting professionals so that they can provide evidence -based and cost-effective art therapy services.

    In this episode, Justin Alan Hayes interviews Leslie Powlette-Stoyer and Ron Rett, Co-Executive Director's at NAMI Summit County. Leslie & Ron describe the mission, vision, history and the future outlook for the organization.

    Leslie just celebrated her tenth year as Co-Executive Director of NAMI Summit County. NAMI Summit County is a grassroots, self-help organization formed in 1986. It is comprised of families and friends, and those impacted by severe mental illness. It is a local affiliate of NAMI Ohio and the NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) which was founded in 1979. The mission of NAMI Summit County is to improve the quality of life for families and individuals who are impacted by mental illness through support, education, and advocacy.
    NAMI Summit County was named Affiliate of the Year in April 2021 by NAMI Ohio. In 2018, NAMI Summit County was presented with an Award of Excellence at the Morgan Impact Awards Dinner for exemplary leadership by facilitating partnerships among organizations and finding ways to focus on solutions, not problems. After relocating to the Akron area in 2000, Leslie volunteered for NAMI Summit County as well as other Summit County nonprofits. Prior to that, Leslie practiced law in Morristown, New Jersey concentrating in corporate and real estate litigation. She served as Law Clerk to the Honorable John J. Harper, Superior Court of New Jersey, and is a graduate of Seton Hall University School of Law and Cedar Crest College. She sits on several local mental health advisory committees, including Summit County Maternal Depression Network, Summit County Mental Health Courts (municipal and common pleas), New Day Court (probate division).

    Prior to serving as Co-Executive Director of NAMI Summit County in 2011, Ron was Consultant to NAMI Ohio and NEOUCOM, Mental Health Medication Hotline Physician Contact Project.  He served as Director of the Mental Health Housing Program for NAMI Ohio from June 2006 through July of 2009.  He has an extensive sales and management background having worked at Enterprise Rental Car and a regional sales manager for Orthocom.  He is a graduate of Ohio University and certified in Six Sigma.  He sits on many local mental health agency boards and advisory committees.

    Welcome to the third episode of the Voices for Voices podcast!

    In this episode, Justin Alan Hayes introduces James Warnken, an active board member for Voices for Voices. James is the secretary and chief operating officer for Voices for Voices.

    James is a young digital marketing professional with a deep understanding of all things digital when it comes to business and branding. Aside from his own business, James works full time with Apex Communications Network as the chief technical officer. James also has a visual disability called genetic retinal dystrophy which was discovered when he was 9 years old. This has been the primary reason why James is so dedicated to helping people and working with them to achieve their goals.

    In this episode, Justin Alan Hayes, founder, and president walks through why he started Voices for Voices and what it stands for.  Just dives deeper into the topic of mental health and how it has played a role in his life and driven him to start a non-profit to help others. Justin has an incredible story to share and wants to spread awareness and allow others to share their stories through whichever creative outlet best fits them.

    We have a whole lineup of episodes to come where we introduce the board and supporting members, as well as interviewing some of our guest speakers from our first annual event!
