Elon Musk, until very recently one of the strongest backers of President Donald J. Trump, has announced his intention to form a “third-party” opposition to what he refers to as the GOP/Democrat “uni-party”—and, indeed, just today Musk filed with the Federal Election Commission to form the newly created “American Party.”

Might it be more difficult to get a third-party off the ground than Trump envisions? What would the American Party stand for that is not already largely captured by the MAGA wing of the Republican party? To the extent the American Party pursues particular political strategies, is it one likely to be embraced by the American people?

Also, what are the likely political implications of an aggressive third-party in American politics? Is it likely to lead to an America more in line with the desires and aspirations of MAGA, or the desires and aspirations of the Democrats?
