  • It All Comes Back to Superman JSApril Special #1 - Thy Kingdom Come
    Apr 29 2025

Welcome to It All Comes Back to Superman Series 2's entry into the mammoth and totally awesome JSApril podcasting crossover!

What is JSApril? It's a celebration of the 85th anniversary of the Justice Society of America! It was spearheaded by my friend Shag from The Fire and Water Podcast Network and there are dozens of blogs and podcasts that are all doing entries and episodes focusing on some aspect of the JSA's history.

In this, the first of two specials that you'll be getting, I talk about the Justice Society of America storyline Thy Kingdom Come. Actually, I do a bit of podcasting multitasking because I also wanted to devote episodes of this show to the stories appearing in the Superman trade boxset that has the snazzy new Superman shield from the movie on the slipcase and one of those is Kingdom Come. So, I mainly talk about the Thy Kingdom Come storyline that ran in Justice Society of America issues 10-22 as well as the annual from 2008 and three specials that came out in November of 2008 but I also spend some time talking about Kingdom Come as well. I also go through where my love of the JSA came from, the set-up to the storyline, some very basic bits of background on why it happened, and then I get into the story itself and along the way I dig into Superman's role in Kingdom Come, why I have come to love that version of the Man of Steel, and a deep dive into the Justice Society of America Kingdom Come Superman Special #1!

  • Episode 20 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 12 - Superman/Doomsday
    Apr 28 2025

Welcome to another city smashing installment of a podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor!

This time out I am joined by Anthony Desiato of Digging For Kryptonite: A Superman Fan Journey and Another Exciting Episode in the Adventures of Superman to talk about the first in a series of animated movies featuring DC characters or adaptations of actual comic book stories. Superman/Doomsday was released in September of 2007 and was not so much an adaptation of The Death and Return of Superman saga as something that was inspired by that story. Anthony and I discuss the pros and cons of taking story beats from the Death and Return (an important story for both of us) as well as the voice cast and the special features that came with the original DVD release. I also spend a good more time than necessary complaining about the Death and Return omnibus that came out at the same time.

Again, Anthony hosts Digging for Kryptonite and Another Exciting Episode in the Adventures of Superman. Both of these shows are excellent podcasts and Anthony has done such a great job shining a light on Superman history and the fifties Adventures of Superman television series.

  • Episode 19 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 11 - Superman Returns
    Apr 21 2025

Welcome...or should I say thank you for returning to the seemingly never ending podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor!

This time out Andrew Leyland of Hey Kids Comics, The Amazing Spider-Man From The Beginning, and The Overlooked Dark Knight fame joins me to talk about 2006's Superman Returns. In the interest of fairness I will warn you that our conversation is not exactly positive. This movie, the first live action Superman film in 19 years, had a huge marketing push and people, including us, were excited, but the final product was...mixed. Andy and I talk about the problems we had with the film but also the things about the film that we liked, which includes the score. We also talk about the lead-up to the movie and even the comic book tie-ins which were definitely stories told with words and images.

As previously mentioned Andy either hosts or co-hosts several other shows. These include Hey Kids Comics (which he co-hosts with his son Micheal), The Amazing Spider-Man From The Beginning (which he hosts on his own), and The Overlooked Dark Knight (which he co-hosts with me). These are all great shows, even the one with me, and you should definitely check them out.

  • Superman Day 2025 Special - Mike's Top 10 Bestest Superman Stories Ever
    Apr 18 2025

    It's Superman Day!

Yes, once again April 18th has rolled around and another Superman Day has come to pass and this year I was in a position to actually do something about it and that "thing" is something I've been planning for literally years and now I am finally getting it done.

Presenting...my Top 10 Bestest Superman Stories Ever!

Not the "best" Superman stories. Not my "favorite" Superman story. An amalgam of the two ideas mashed together to make for something that truly reflects what I love about Superman and his stories. After going through my thoughts on Top 10 lists in general, and talking about what criteria I used to come up with this list I get right into it. Some are obvious. Some less so. Some are tied to when I was a kid and some are very, very personal.

What are those Top 10 Bestest Stories? Well, I am not going to spoil that here. You'll have to listen to find out but it's totally worth it.

  • Episode 18 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 10 - Brainiac Attacks
    Apr 14 2025

Welcome to another exciting and can't miss installment of a podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor!

This time out I am joined by Luke Bugg, the Geek of Steel, host of The Podcast of Steel and co-host of The Siegel and Shuster Society Podcast, to talk about the 2006 direct-to-home media movie Superman: Brainiac Attacks. This is the one movie I thought I would have the hardest time finding a co-host for because it is not well regarded by...just about everyone. But Luke actually requested this one and we had a good time talking about it and his Superman fandom and our excitement for the upcoming movie.

Seriously. It was such a good time.

Again, be sure to check out Luke on The Podcast of Steel and The Siegel and Shuster Society Podcast. He is one of the most genuinely positive voices in Superman fandom.

  • Episode 17 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 9 (Addendum) - Superman Reborn The First Draft
    Apr 7 2025

Welcome to an installment of the podcasting maxi-series Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman that was not planned at all and came together quickly! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor!

In the previous episode Adam Mallinger and I talked about three scripts that were ultimately unproduced on the long, nineteen year road to what would become Superman Returns. One of those scripts was Superman Reborn, which Adam and I assumed was an earlier draft. What we didn't know at the time is that the first draft of what was originally called Superman: The New Movie had gotten a full blown reading at the Broadway Theater in Hollywood thanks to funding from the Kaplan-Loring Foundation. I mentioned this in post on the last episode and even included a link to the YouTube video in the show notes at the website.

The man who spearheaded this whole thing is named David Kocher and he was nice enough to sit down with me and talk about how this reading came about. We touch on David's origins as a fan of Superman, how he met Mark Jones (who had the first draft) finding a director, the casting, and everything that went into the reading. We also have a spirited discussion about Superman movies in general and David shares his thoughts on the film that is hitting theaters in July.

I can't thank David enough for agreeing to be part of this series. As I indicated earlier this reading came seemingly out of nowhere and talking to David and watching the reading fit right in to what I've been doing for the past few months. Be sure to check out David's YouTube channel, which can be found by clicking this link.

During the end tag I mentioned the JSApril event that I'll be a part of towards the end of the month. My good friend Shag of the Fire and Water Podcasting Network organized this and I'll be joining a bunch of other shows that are celebrating the 85th anniversary of the Justice Society of America. Until my shows come out check out the other great podcasts that are a part of this event by clicking on this link!

  • Episode 16 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 9 - Roads Not Taken: Superman Reborn, Lives, and Flyby
    Mar 31 2025

Welcome to an off-beat installment of the podcasting maxi-series Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor!

This time out I am not covering a movie, either live action or animated. I am covering three scripts to Superman films that were never made. Joining me is Adam Mallinger, who not only worked as a script reader early in his career but was a staff writer on the CW series Superman and Lois. Adam and I go through drafts of Superman Reborn (which, if made, would have brought back Christopher Reeve as Superman, Superman Lives (written by Kevin Smith), and Superman: Flyby (written by J.J. Abrams). We discuss our overall feelings on these scripts, Kevin Smith, the role the internet plays in how movies get made, Ain't It Cool News, and more. We also dig into the differences between a script and the movie that is eventually made of that script.

Adam and I recorded this episode last year and in the time since our recording and this episode getting released there was a full cast reading of the first draft of Superman Reborn (which was originally called Superman: The New Movie) organized by David Kocher. Adam and I don't talk about it because it had not happened yet much less posted to YouTube. If you want to see that reading, the video is embedded below.

    Mar 24 2025

Welcome to the another bat-tastic installment of the podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor!

This time out J David Weter (but you can call him Dave) of The Bat-Pod Podcast and Justice League Legacies joins me to talk about The Batman/Superman Movie: World's Finest. This is another example of Warner Brothers taking three episodes of Superman: The Animated Series and cutting them together as a direct-to-video movie, which means that I am once again calling it a movie and covering it. Dave and I talk about why despite years of being teammates on the various Super Friends show this first team up in the DC Animated Universe was such a big deal, romance (or the lack thereof) in Superman: The Animated Series, how this movie could have easily been a live action film, and more!

Be sure to check out Dave's show The Bat-Pod and Justice League Legacies. Dave has been a podcasting for well over a decade now and has had many shows and they are always of high quality and a lot of fun.
