James Ellroy is classic literature in crime reporting

Many of these stories are from his book crime wave which is a collection of his reportage on known and little known crimes in Los Angeles. I have been a fan and a James Ellroy for the past 30 years. His stuff really transports me back to the times he’s writing about. If you want a good taste of interesting crime stories All written in an exciting and stylistic way look no further than the demon dog.

Get the Rythym

I'm only a few shows in but I really like this podcast. At first the subs effects were distracting, and I thought it to be a very messy tale. I continued listening to the stories and became more accustomed to the style.

Now I'm binge listening. My only issue is my brain doesn't work as fast as it used to, so a little bit more space after sentences would be nice. I think that's it. Sometimes things are just too close together and I have to go back 30 seconds and relisten. The sound effects are sometimes distracting but also sometimes it really adds value.

The stories and processes are very interesting. and I love Mr. Ellwood's voice. If it was just a little bit more slower I would give it a five across the board.

Kept the obligatory preaching to a minimum

There wasn't as much gratuitous virtue signaling as might have been expected. There was some unnecessary political whining and woke scolding, but there were a lot of thought provoking facts that made up for it. Four stars for keeping that waste of time to a minimum and only four stars for dragging it in in the first place.

Excellent overall

Very well done. Some of the victim sound effects were a bit gratuitous for sure, but this is James Ellroy. You’ve got to expect some excess. I didn’t have any problem following the details as some has stated. I thought the last episode dealing with a potential perp was chilling and really well done.
I listened to My Dark Places and really enjoyed it. So, if you liked this podcast, give it a listen while we await season 2!!! I’m looking forward to it.

Incredible

Loved it, binge listened in two days. Ellroy breathes life into old murders and describes places long changed. This work explores pieces of his own history, life and feelings on a topic that his entire life and much of his bibliography have revolved around: Los Angeles area homicides. Hearing it from the Demon Dog's own mouth is fascinating and adds another layer to the experience. A literal voice, THE literal voice I suppose, to his unique (and in my book, unmatched) writing style. Its got its own beat and its not for everyone, but if its for you, its for you.

A Stunning Audio Experience

I’ve just finished all five episodes and feel
as if I entered the brain of James Ellroy. From start to finish I was enveloped in the story, his narration and the incredible sound design. I’ve never heard a true crime podcast quite like this one. Ellroy is a master storyteller and this podcast is a masterclass in production.

The Demon Dog is back!

Whether you’re a seasoned vet or new to the whole shebang, this is the demon dog in top form. Ellroy’s baritone growl is perfect for the audio format and the sleazy salacious stories coupled with the sound design create a whole auditory noir for you to sink into. Fans of true crime, fans of history, and fans of fun do not look away!

True crime the Ellroy way

The smell of old case files mixed with the immediacy of terror and the banality of evil. The guilty voyeurism of murder as entertainment, sadness and death as mood music. The horror of the real. More please?

Ellroy in top form

Listening to Hollywood Death Trip gave me the same thrill as when I first discovered Ellroy with “LA Confidential” —- that word rush that felt like beat poetry and coming on to drugs. It’s not a podcast; it’s an experience.
