America Hates Again: Asian Hate in The Age Of Covid

  • Resumen

  • When you neglect an old wound, it has a way of creeping up on you during times of distress. Without the proper attention, the smallest wound can make you start to lose your grip on reality, and slowly start to descend into madness. A few sensationalized stories about faulty lab work in a Chinese lab has sent Americans into a complete hysteria regarding the origin of the pandemic. Everywhere you turn it seems as if someone has their own unique version of who is responsible for the outbreak, and very rarely do any of these stories match up with the CDC's version. People tend to take their ill will out on others when they have no one to blame. We are society obsessed with placing blame on people, righting supposed wrongs, rescuing non-existent damsels in distress, and saving the world from the awful influence of the "other". Thought the anti-immigration sentiment is strong in America, it is important to note that one need not be from another nation to receive the negative treatment associated with being an outsider in this country. There is, after all, an American way, and that way has very strict requirements for what an American is supposed to look like. Of course the media has successfully stolen the issue of Asian hate from the people it actually effects, and turned it into a giant "who has done the most for Asian people" cockfight, which the conservative and liberal alphabet soup media tend to do with every issue concerning human rights. It's all a show for the big media corporations. They believe that if you talk enough about something on TV then the problem will simply disappear. We all know this is a farce. Sitting around talking to someone who hated you even before the pandemic began is not going to convince them that you're an okay person. It's much more important to recognize the harsh reality that success in America is not always synonymous with progress. That is to say, one can be quite successful in America, but still not be accepted as a part of the society. Never forget that social contracts are not forged in stone, and, even if they were, someone would find a way to alter them. As we have seen with situations like Black Wall Street, the thriving black business hub that was completely destroyed by white rage in the early 1900s, your economic and social status in this country is conditional, and subject to white supremacist review at all times. This can be a disturbing reality for some to accept. We want to think that horrible things are in the past. But do we know this for certain? Racism is a silent killer. It works slowly, almost without notice. It seeps into your daily life, toying with our hopes, dreams and passions until you are left a shell of your former self. You find yourself being used as a political pawn in a game for power that often has nothing to do with you in any real way. This can be quite disheartening in a time where we should be able to focus on our health; however, all is not lost. Though, I cannot promise you some great acceptance from the white supremacist in this nation, I can reassure you that you do not need or want it. Acceptance is a tricky word. It can fool you into believing that problems don't exist. I don't think that we need to accept each other as we are. I think that if people are persecuting others it needs to stop, regardless of how free their speech is. That's right, I'm telling all the supposed loving people of America to knock it off with the damn hatred all the time. Why is it that America only seems to give a damn when I'm in a bad mood? Maybe it should look in the mirror for once. So, enough with the hate America. Do what you told me to do when I asked you what I I would do for job, "buck up, get over it, pull yourself up by your own bootstraps, stop bothering everyone with your problems, and stop being so goddamn negative!" See, it doesn't feel that great when someone does it to you, does it?
