You know the feeling: You thought you said exactly what you wanted to, but somehow a different message comes across. You end up feeling misunderstood...and the relationship that you're building -- at home, on the job, on a date, or in an interview -- slips a little further out of your control.

It was Tannen who first showed us that men and women speak different languages. Mothers and daughters speak the same language, but still often misunderstand each other, as they struggle to find the right balance between closeness and independence. Both mothers and daughters want to be seen for who they are, but tend to see the other as falling short of who she should be. Each overestimates the other's power and underestimates her own.

This discussion between best-selling authors Deborah Tannen (You Just Don't Understand) and Robert Bly (Iron John) is presented as a sort of continuing education program. It is utterly delightful. The authors are both funny and serious. They care a great deal about the topic of women and men's conversational styles. The production is so well done that even questions from the audience are picked up by the microphones.

Best friend, old friend, good friend, BFF, college roommate, neighbor, workplace confidante: women's friendships are lifelines in times of trouble and support systems for daily life. A friend can be like a sister, daughter, mother, mentor, therapist, or confessor - or she can be all of these at once. She's seen you at your worst and celebrates you at your best. Figuring out what it means to be friends is, in the end, no less than figuring out how we connect to other people.

Why does talk in families so often go in circles, leaving us tied up in knots? Linguist Deborah Tannen reveals why talking to family members is so often painful and problematic - even when we're all adults. Searching for signs of acceptance, we find signs of disapproval and rejection. Why do the seeds of family love so often yield a harvest of criticism? In I Only Say This Because I Love You, Tannen shows how important it is, in family talk, to learn to separate word meanings, or messages, from heart meanings, or metamessages.

The ones who don't quit become disengaged, creating a negative work environment costing US companies billions in lost productivity, each year. Leaders in the 21st century need to understand that technical skills are not enough to be an effective manager. They need to able to demonstrate tactical empathy to create a more productive environment.

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Heralded by the New York Times and Time as the couples therapy with the highest rate of success, Emotionally Focused Therapy works because it views the love relationship as an attachment bond. This idea, once controversial, is now supported by science, and has become widely popular among therapists around the world. In Hold Me Tight, Dr. Sue Johnson presents Emotionally Focused Therapy to the general public for the first time. Johnson teaches that the way to save and enrich a relationship is to reestablish safe emotional connection and preserve the attachment bond.

Do you know one of these men? The catch-me-if-you-can lover...Phil's romantic and passionate one minute, distant and cold the next. The deviously manipulative coworker or boss...Jack denies resenting Nora's rapid rise in the company, but when they're assigned to work together on a project, he undermines her. The obstructionist, procrastinating husband...Bob keeps telling his wife he'll finish the painting job he began years ago, but he never seems to get around to it. These are all classic examples of the passive aggressive man.

Why is this 60-year-old theory, widely accepted in psychological circles, suddenly in vogue? Because people are discovering how powerfully it sheds light on who we love - and how. Fascinated by the subject, award-winning journalist and author Peter Lovenheim went on a years-long journey to understand it from the inside out.

You Just Don't Understand
This books represents an inciteful view of the linguistic differences between men and women. It takes a non-biased approach on dissecting the differences between the two sexes and how they interpret different meanings, from the same words, in identical context. Not your typical "Venus v. Mars" book.....

Insightful
I was assigned this book in a class a few semesters ago, and couldn't understand why. That was untill I read it. It is insightful, and gives explainations, to terrible relationships I have had in the past. Now when I get frustrated with someone I think back to this book, and try to understand whether we disagree or are just misunderstanding each others.

Interesting, but not helpful
Ok, so now I know that men and women think, speak, and understand things differently... Wait, doesn’t everyone already know that? Of course we do. So what! How is this content supposed to help Me use that Information to better my communication with my wife. It wasn’t helpful at all.

I was expecting this to read like the actual book.
This audiobook is way off the rails from how the actual book is read. I’m in college and was just trying to find the full audiobook to listen as I read and this audiobook has pieces of the actual book but it seems to be just thrown together poorly and not in order of the real book. Waste of money.

men and women are different -- DUH!
All I got from this "book" is that men and women are different. Duh! For those under 35 or 40 this might be a revelation, but not for those of us above. I gave this "book" a 1 because it was not possible to give it a 0. In nearly fifty years on this earth I have found that the example people used are more the exception than the rule. people, both men and women, fall everywhere within the spectrum including the stereotypical man and stereotypical woman. While the "average man" and "average woman" groups might not be coincidental, they are both further from there stereotype extremes than one might infer from listening to this "book". Do yourself two favors: remember that men and women are different; and give your 8 dollars and 90 minutes to your favorite charity.
As a small defense of this book, I've yet to find an abridged version of anything worth the money spent. Though I doubt it, it is possible that an unabridged version of this book might be worth a look.
