Excellent presentation on cognitive story telling

I recently listened to Brittany Pressley narrate Wired for Story. Along with doing an excellent job of conveying Lisa Cron’s cognitive storytelling information, her narration skills proved to be very engaging.

Wired for Story is a unique text on storytelling. While most of the books I’ve listened to or read related to writing fiction, this is the first that tied that endeavor to brain science. Not only does Lisa Cron provide a considerable amount of what might be technical information, she includes examples and provides the basic techniques in a way that is easily approachable to a novice writer who isn’t an expert on brain science.

After listening to the audiobook, I realized I need to purchase a copy of the kindle book so I can annotate it for easy reference.

Great info for writers and creatives

I’ve read so many books on the craft of writing, and I studied it in college. It’s hard to find ones that aren’t redundant or a regurgitation of the countless others that came before it, but this accomplishes that. I’ll be buying this in hard copy to keep on hand to re-read in the future.

Yes! This is a Game Changer

The book is an excellent guide on “everything” to do with writing. Although the focus is on literary fiction I wish I would’ve read it before writing my master thesis- I know I could’ve saved myself a lot of criticism and ordered rewriting. This book is a must for ANYONE he needs their readers to keep reading.

This book is totally mind-blowing. It’s also the first book I’ve read on writing thats actually about reading. If you are a writer, you cannot skip this book. Well done!

Wonderful approach to story building

Lisa Cron lays out the reasons why a writer must follow the proper path of storytelling. Rather than solely utilizing bestselling novels, Cron breaks down the neurological reasons why a reader subconsciously NEEDS elements of a story in place. Excellent job of narration as well!

Actionable advice

I thought the entire audio had excellent points and questions that made me think about my story.

Focused on a specific genre

It could be just my impression in the first chapters, but I couldn't read through the rest of the book, it seemed to be too much focused on a specific genre that is not the one I'm looking for. Also, didn't enjoy so much the heavy usage of methafors that just leave you with a vague idea of a method or goal, instead of a more clear definition, again, maybe this methafors are ok for a given genre but not easily transferable to others. So my recommendation is to maybe give the book a go, and if in the first two chapters you feel like this reaches to you and the genre you wish to write for, than maybe you'll enjoy it.

Nothing new

The title andthe writeup promises something this book just doesn't deliver. Cron touches on actual neuro and adjacent sciences maybe 10 times.
What we have between those underdeveloped moments it's just another howto writing book that rephrases the advice you find encounter list other manuals.
Her examples by professional writers are scant and dated. She's chosen a few and just goes back to them time and time again.
The examples that she generates herself are so beguilingly bad it almost feels like parody.
The real problem with what this book really is is that it fails to take into account where we are with technology and what machine learning will do to the world of entertainment and those who create it.
Really, the book has advice for the application that will be writing most of what you read and watch.
Never or her limits more clear than when she has trouble discerning theme from subject, the one place where it is likely that the human product will still be something of value.
For a deeper look into the actual neuroscience: The Science of Storytelling. It wanders into rephrasing as well, but at least the foundation is strong.
