Acerca de esta escucha

Beth Baxter always dreamt of being an author. Unfortunately, fate has a twisted sense of humour so rather than writing books, she now sells them in a second-hand bookshop. With middle-age approaching and her life unfulfilled, Beth is at least grateful her forthcoming marriage to Karl is worthy of hope — or, so she thought.

When her fiancé’s sordid past catches up with him, Beth finds herself embroiled in a sinister game of hide and seek. As her life is torn apart and all appears lost, Beth is thrown an unlikely lifeline when a former gangland fixer called Clement crashes into her life, offering to help.

Unfortunately for Beth, there is one minor complication with her saviour — Clement claims he died in 1975 and must help Beth as penance for sins committed in his previous life.

With just seven days to avoid a fate she can’t bear to contemplate, Beth chooses the lesser of two evils and reluctantly joins her deluded, politically incorrect companion on a quest across London in search of a solution.

Will this unlikely partnership succeed? Will Clement ever come to terms with paying five quid for a pint? And will Beth ever learn the truth about who sent Clement?

Clement Surprise

I found that the day-to-day or step-by-step details that normally could be tedious weren't in this story. The main female character's loneliness, helplessness, anger and strength were easy to identify with.

Engaging Story

The book was free and a nice surprise. Not sure how to review it without spoilers. Beth prides herself on being strong, independent, and resilient, but the story makes it clear that unresolved daddy issues have caused her serious strife in her choice of men. She is cautious about Clement (a mysterious stranger sent to help her, from where she has no idea). Nonetheless, she still takes him home, feeds him, and follows him around London because Beth believes (with minimal proof) that Clement is trying to help. The way the author juxtaposes the racism and sexism of the 1970s to British society in 2016 is interesting. However, Clement lays it on so thick, that it's like another character. The religious angle was a question mark for most of the book, too.

Listening to a smart, albeit scared and desperate woman so easily contort her life around yet another man, even one claiming to be coming to her rescue, after she rails about her awful history with men was disconcerting. That said, it is an engaging book, and pleasant to listen to while puttering around the house or running errands - which is not nuthin'.

Weak story line, poor writing

Hollywood plot with same ending. Feels like I’ve lost tons of time reading this book…

Unsuccesful expansion of an idea into a complete novel.

This book fails to develop its proposed narrative in a believable or interesting way, constantly reaffirms the narrators disbelief in the reality that we, the readers, are as much as assured of from the beginning, and alltogether paints a decidedly repulsive and bleak picture of human nature rather than the redemption narrative it seemed to imply in its premise.
