Acerca de esta escucha

A military classic by a legendary American general.

War as I Knew It is the personal and candid account of General George S. Patton, Jr.'s celebrated, relentless crusade across Europe during World War II.

First published in 1947, this absorbing narrative draws on Patton's vivid memories of battle and his detailed diaries, from the moment the Third Army exploded onto the Brittany Peninsula to the final Allied casualty report. The result is not only a grueling, human account of daily combat but also a valuable chronicle of the strategies and fiery personality of a brilliant warrior.

General Patton was more humble and a better tactician than I originally thought!

My great great uncle General Patton was never described in this manner and this book has been one of the most intriguing reads I have ever read!

Most illuminating...

I found this reading of General Patton's diaries, with historical commentaries quite amazing, and some of the things said about him seem a fiction after hearing his own words, for example, from the movie, we are less to believe the he believes in reincarnation, and t5 of the fields of battle that he was treading on were the same ones that Napoleon, and his army fought on, and the significance of that!

The lessons in this book should be being taught in all Military academies, and if they are not, then I fear for the safety of our nation, and our posterity!

A must read for anyone in a leadership position.

The narrator did a splendid job illustrating the words of the late great General. The only person who could one up this performance would be George C. Scott.

Outstanding for What It Is

It was such a delight to hear these first hand accounts of war by one of the greatest practitioners of the art of war in the history of war.

There’s no doubt that Eisenhower was right: we were so fortunate that it was George Patton who drove the campaign on the ground for the Allies in such crucial ways and at crucial times in WW II.

To hear how he made decisions and hear of the impact of his decisions at major times in the War was so instructive to me about how the war took the turns it took at crucial times of the war.

These accounts, therefore, add so much to understanding about the War and its turns and, ultimately, its outcomes.

Further, it was great to have the final chapters in which Patton tackles specific issues and analyzes them and how they played out.

One gets a hint at the very end about some of the odd political and personal views Patton held. Many of his superiors were glad that his duties had been fulfilled and that it was time for him to “hang ‘em up.” It’s very sad how Patton died at the end, but it’s also clear that his mind was, how best to put it, highly confused at the end.

BUT none of this takes away from the extraordinary service he gave to the American (and Western) cause. In fact, our winning the war against the Nazis was significantly dependent on his extraordinary leadership in carrying out military campaigns against the Axis powers in the war.

Here we see a lot about how he did it and why we should appreciate it.
