Acerca de esta escucha

The immortal knight hunts a ruthless vampire through the battlefields of the Hundred Years' War.

AD 1346. King Edward III wages war to claim the crown of France by conquest. On the battlefield of Crecy, Richard confronts a mysterious knight with inhuman strength fighting beneath a banner as black as death.

To find his dangerous new enemy, Richard assembles a company of veteran men-at-arms and deadly English archers. Together, they must invade France and burn and plunder the country to bring the mighty French army to battle.

But Richard's pursuit of the murderous black knight is brought to a sudden halt by the worst disaster Europe has ever known. As millions die and his loved ones fall to the pestilence, Richard searches the darkest corners of Christendom for the chance of finding a cure.

What he discovers will change him, and all of history, forever.

Great

Always looking for a good listen and this series never fails. Only disappointment is waiting for the next book to be released on audio

Great series

I love how you can tell how much this author knows his history just by listening to the details he gives. You can tell that he has done his research yet keeps the fictional parts interesting and thriving.

Finally something that held my attention!

I’ve had a hard time finding a book I enjoy lately. I picked this one almost by accident. If you liked A Distant Mirror by Barbara Tuchman, you will love this. It is like being thrown into the middle of it with a really interesting narrator/main character.

I read none of the previous books in the series but found it easy to keep up. It is not just a book filled with history nerd cameos (look the flagellants!) but it actually has an interesting character whom you want to follow along in his quest. Sure, the story is a bit thin, but Richard feels real to me. He is not perfect or infallible. He’s not the unbeatable overpowered guy. Those characters are boring to me. Richard makes mistakes, and people pay the price. He gets beat up. He gets saved. He has prejudices and flaws and his morality comes into question.

I like how his power as a vampire also mirrors his power as a privileged lord. He can do as he will and he wrestles with who he wants to be or can be. The narration is superb and overall it goes at a really fast pace.

Brilliant!

I think Mr. Davis is on the cusp of creating a series as immortal as his characters

I love all the books… but

Endless Potential, Constantly Undermined

At its core, this series has a fascinating premise and a world brimming with potential. However, Richard’s character progression is one of the most frustrating aspects of the story. Despite being a monstrous figure who has lived for centuries, he is repeatedly nerfed with each new book. Meanwhile, every immortal created by William turns into an unstoppable force, making Richard’s stagnation even more glaring.

It’s baffling that someone with his longevity neither grows significantly stronger nor demonstrates the wisdom expected of someone with his experience. Instead, he remains frustratingly static, outclassed by newer characters and seemingly learning little from his long life. This pattern drains much of the excitement from his journey, making it difficult to stay invested.

While there are moments of brilliance in the storytelling, the repeated setbacks and lack of meaningful growth for Richard hold the series back from truly shining.
