This book was pretty good. Booker T was an incredible man. More people should follow his lead.

A BEACON FOR ALL

This autobiography by Booker T Washington should be a must read in middle and again in high school. During a time of extreme difficulty, high hurdles and headwinds, Booker grows with undaunted determination to acquire an education and then provide his services to educate with the objective of elevating and providing opportunity to a recently freed population that has been held back and still faced adversity to progress.
Although Booker describes his youth on the plantations, Booker’s autobiography doesn’t dwell on where he came from, but concentrates on a brighter future for all with the elevation of “his race” to the benefit of all.
Booker’s selfless life and spirit are a shining light that gives hope to all.

Black History

I enjoyed learning about the history of Tuskegee and how Booker T Washington made such a lasting impression on everyone who crossed his path. I’m amazed by the timing and the amount of money he raised along with other’s to make Tuskegee a powerful HBCU today!

If everyone had the foresight and determination of Mr. Washington. Wow, what could we as a society accomplish!

A man ahead of his time

This man was wise beyond his years. Proof that hard work, determination and grit can accomplish any goal in life. His story really stood out to me. I would recommend this to anyone.

A must read. Extremely current. Valuably poignant

Up from Slavery has been in my reading list for a few years. I wanted to read it because it felt I had a responsibility to read it. Now I wish I read it first. Re-reading it in January 2022, I remember when I first read it in high school in 1988. I wonder how much it influenced me then, because it resonates to my core now. I think Booker T Washington was certainly doing more than writing an autobiography. He was carefully, as he did his whole life, advocating for the humanity in all races to manifest daily. His emphasis on hard work, empathy, industry, education, charity, and faith not only epitomize his own life and life’s work but also serve as the template we should emulate today. This is a masterpiece for all time and should be read widely.

Should be read by every American

Other than name recognition, I didn’t really know much about Booker T Washington, that is sad. After listening to this book I now think he is one of the truly great American heroes.

Should be read by every American and his name should be held with the same esteem and reverence as Dr. King.

Everyone should read this book

This man's story is essential. In 2020 everybody needs to hear this. I don't know if kids still learn about him in school, but growing up, I think I only had maybe one lesson about him and W.E.B. DuBois. Teach your kids about Booker T. Washington.
