Acerca de esta escucha
Valeria Aloe’s Uncolonized Latinas: Transforming Our Mindsets and Rising Together lays out an unprecedented detailed map of the Latino mindset and what is holding the community back from achieving its highest potential. Along the way, we meet immigrant Latinas and daughters of immigrants who, through trials and tribulations, have uncolonized their limiting mindsets and have found success in their lives and career.
This book guides us to:
Embrace our individual and collective greatness, as we honor our stories and our ancestry.
Become more aware of the limiting cultural narratives that have been running us.
As a Latina, thrive in your career and life from a place of self-esteem, as you learn from those Latinas who figured out how to navigate the system.
As an ally, feel confident and become more effective when mentoring diverse talent.
Through this journey, we can learn how to experience transformational change—open our heart, mind, and eyes.

In this dual polemic and manifesto, Julissa dives into and tears apart the lie that assimilation leads to belonging. She combs through history and her own story to break down this myth, arguing that assimilation is a moving finish line designed to keep Black and brown Americans and immigrants chasing racist American ideals. She talks about the Lie of Success, the Lie of Legality, the Lie of Whiteness, and the Lie of English - each promising that if you obtain these things, you will reach acceptance and won’t be an outsider anymore.

Historia
America Ferrera has always felt wholly American, and yet, her identity is inextricably linked to her parents’ homeland and Honduran culture. Speaking Spanish at home, having Saturday morning salsa-dance parties in the kitchen, and eating tamales alongside apple pie at Christmas never seemed at odds with her American identity. Still, she yearned to see that identity reflected in the larger American narrative. Now, in American Like Me, America invites 31 of her friends, peers, and heroes to share their stories about life between cultures.

Historia
Every day we experience the uncertainty, risks, and emotional exposure that define what it means to be vulnerable or to dare greatly. Based on 12 years of pioneering research, Dr. Brené Brown dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and argues that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage. Brown explains how vulnerability is both the core of difficult emotions like fear, grief, and disappointment, and the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, empathy, innovation, and creativity.

Historia
Today's feminist movement has a glaring blind spot, and paradoxically, it is women. Mainstream feminists rarely talk about meeting basic needs as a feminist issue, argues Mikki Kendall, but food insecurity, access to quality education, safe neighborhoods, a living wage, and medical care are all feminist issues. All too often, however, the focus is not on basic survival for the many, but on increasing privilege for the few. Author Mikki Kendall takes aim at the legitimacy of the modern feminist movement arguing that it has chronically failed to address the needs of all but a few women.

Women of color comprise one of the fastest-growing segments in the corporate workforce, yet often we are underrepresented—among the first, few, or only ones in a department or company. We need a fundamental shift in our values—a pivot in how we think, act, work, and connect. Despite what we’ve been told, the most critical mainspring of social change isn’t coalition building or problem analysis. It’s healing: deep, whole, and systemic, inside and out. Here, Shawn Ginwright, PhD, breaks down the common myths of social movements—a set of deeply ingrained beliefs that actually hold us back from healing and achieving sustainable systemic change.

Almost every Latina has heard the phrase calladita te ves más bonita—you look most beautiful when you are silent. It's a message rooted in machismo passed from generation to generation, and one that poet and Latine therapist, Kim Guerra, grew up on. In Badass Bonita, Guerra tells a story of coming into her own power, and guides listeners through the process of finding their own. Rejecting what she was taught as a girl, she learned to use her voice and the more she listened to that inner niña, the more she unearthed her inner guerrera.

Spanning more than 200 years, An African American and Latinx History of the United States is a revolutionary, politically charged narrative history arguing that the "Global South" was crucial to the development of America as we know it. Ortiz challenges the notion of westward progress, and shows how placing African American, Latinx, and Indigenous voices unapologetically front and center transforms American history into the story of the working class organizing against imperialism.

Must Have!
Whether you are listening to the audio book or reading it, it's a must have! I read the book and it was the book I didn't know I needed! I highlighted some many sections of the book that really resonated with me- so I can quickly reference them whenever I need a reminder of 'SI SE PUEDE!' I then listened to the audio & it was just as great, if not better because I was able to hear the book through Valeria's voice! It gives a sense of 'orgullosa Latina' and empowerment!

Excellent authentic read!
Valerie's story is inspiring and love that she remained true to her values, while excelling in her career. Appreciate her courage to be vulnerable and share her cultural experiences, so other Latinas can develop. My fav is that she narrated her book and did not try to eliminate an accent, which made for an authentic tale. Bravo!

A needed book for Latinas!
Valeria does an exceptional job of highlighting the numerous barriers that Latina women encounter while navigating careers in corporate America. What resonated with me most from this book is the realization that our success is not just about honoring the sacrifices of our parents and grandparents. We also have a collective responsibility to support one another as Latinas, widening the narrow doors of opportunity and lifting each other up. With increased access to opportunities and power comes the responsibility to help others do the same. Thank you for writing a book that brims with vulnerability and for uplifting so many Latina women who have crossed your path!

Life Altering in the Best Way
Reading Uncolonized Latinas is a healing process that every Latina needs to gift herself. I've read the hard copy and listened to the audiobook twice; I love hearing the stories and advice from Valeria herself. The book not only explains why we inherited damaging cultural narratives, but it also gives us a clear and actionable plan on how to emancipate ourselves from those limiting beliefs. Valeria's book gave me the courage and a guide to start the process of unlearning, loving myself exactly as I am, and get closer to becoming "unapologetically uncolonized." My life, and my childrens' lives will be better for it. Thank God for Valeria's book.
