Trick Baby tells the story of White Folks, a blue-eyed, light-haired con artist whose pale skin allows him to pass in the streets as a white man. Folks is tormented early in life, rejected by other children and branded a "trick baby", a child conceived between a hooker and her trick. Refusing to abandon his life in the ghetto and a chance at revenge, Folks is taken under the wing of an older mentor, Blue. What happens next is unbelievable.
Only Slim could bring us the story of a hustler forced to learn the game and rise to the top. It's Slim's story, and he tells it the only way he knows how: in the language of the streets.

At the age of 18, Iceberg Slim was initiated into "the life". Predominately in Chicago, he was incarcerated several times for pimpng, along with several other crimes. During his last stretch in prison he wrote "Pimp" which sold over 6 million copies. In 1976 Slim made this recording, "Reflections", the poignant and memorable recounting of many of his true life experiences. The stories told are not easily forgotten and leave their indelible mark on the listener.

Prison buddies Billy Good and Jackie Walker made time pulling small jobs here and there. Not a bad living if you liked scraping by. The thing to worry about was the next fix. Nothing else mattered. When Billy and Jackie fell in with Kenyatta, a ghetto lord ready to take back the streets, they thought they'd hit the big time. Dealing with drug pushers and crooked cops in the name of justice sure felt good, but in a world where "kindness was the sweetest con of all", every bullet fired echoed with the sound of payback.

Great story!
Another dive into a world so unbelievable, and tragic. The characters in this story are just as immersive as Iceberg Slim's previous entry, Pimp. A great listen!

beyond intense and good for my white suburb ears
This book or at least excerpts from it should be taught high school and college history classes. how can books like The Great Gatsby and Hamlet be taught in school and a book like this remains a secret?

This book was so realistic I felt like I was there

The Ins and Outs of the Con Game
Would you listen to Trick Baby again? Why?
Gary Hite has an excellent voice. It's like hearing the whole story in an old barbershop. In fact this was kind of the story you would hear in a barbershop.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I liked Blue because he wanted to be the protector. He was the senior man, but like "Folks" he had weaknesses that ultimately foiled his character.
Which scene was your favorite?
When folks was chasing after the poisonous woman and never found her. It was a nightmare scenario that few people will admit to.
Who was the most memorable character of Trick Baby and why?
All the characters were memorable.
Any additional comments?
This was a lot better than Pimp. Robert Beck aka Iceberg was one of the best writers of any kind of fiction.
