It's every novelist's greatest fear: pouring their blood, sweat, and tears into writing hundreds of pages only to realize that their story has no sense of urgency, no internal logic, and so is a page-one rewrite. The prevailing wisdom in the writing community is that there are just two ways around this problem: pantsing (winging it) and plotting (focusing on the external plot).

Paris, 1933: Three contemporaries meet over apricot cocktails at the Bec-de-Gaz bar on the rue Montparnasse. They are the young Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and longtime friend Raymond Aron, a fellow philosopher who raves to them about a new conceptual framework from Berlin called phenomenology. "You see," he says, "if you are a phenomenologist, you can talk about this cocktail and make philosophy out of it!"

This book has a name: Bob. Bob is Paul's Book of Books, a journal that records every book she's ever read.

Blending memoir and polemic with close readings of her favorite novels, she describes the unexpected journey that led her to become an American citizen after first dreaming of America as a young girl in Tehran and coming to know the country through its fiction. She urges us to rediscover the America of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and challenges us to be truer to the words and spirit of the Founding Fathers, who understood that their democratic experiment would never thrive or survive unless they could foster a democratic imagination.

Fantastically Short and to the Point
I was looking for a book to recommend to someone who wants to write, but is not a big reader and eschews fluff of any kind in instructional material. This is the book for him. It gives great advice and covers the basics of what is necessary to write a book in a year. The narrator is excellent and adds another dimension to the writing. I heartily recommend this to you if you have similar characteristics as my new writer friend.

Thank U Mr. Mosley
As of October, 2023 I am a published author! After reading/listening to this book, I now know my missteps and also where I did okay. I chuckled when you said that the first draft should be completed in three months. It took me 4 1/2 months to do so, but I am still proud of my work and thankful for your book and the sharing of your gift!
