Acerca de esta escucha

In Depression-era Arkansas, something wicked has come to a haunted mountain town in a novel of uncanny suspense by the author of Parting the Veil.

Blood and power bind three generations of women in the Ozark Mountains. So does an evil that’s followed them across the decades.

1931. Gracelynn Doherty lives peacefully on Tin Mountain, helping her adoptive granny work her cures. Despite whispers that the women are witches, the superstitious locals still seek them out, whether to remedy arthritis or a broken heart. But when evangelist Josiah Bellflower comes to town promising miracle healing, full bellies, and prosperity, his revivals soon hold Tin Mountain in thrall—and Granny in abject fear.

Granny recognizes Josiah. Fifty years ago, in a dark and desperate moment, she made a terrible promise. Now Josiah, an enemy, has returned to collect his due.

As Granny sickens and the drought-ridden countryside falls under a curse, Gracelynn must choose: flee Tin Mountain and the only family she knows, or confront the vengeful preacher whose unholy mission is to destroy her.

Reseñas de la Crítica

“With LGBTQ representation, Kennedy’s captivating second novel is perfect for historical fiction readers who enjoy a bit of witchcraft, folklore, and mystery.”Booklist

“The antagonist, the demon, goes by three different names and is incredibly real. So real that images from the novel lingered for days in my mind.”Historical Novels Review

“Kennedy weaves an achingly beautiful tale full of dark folklore, powerful women, and spine-tingling suspense. Deirdre’s and Gracelynn’s stories will grab you by the heart and stay with you long after the last page.”—Hester Fox, author of A Lullaby for Witches

Everything I was hoping for and more!

Such good story telling and character development. As a mountain girl myself, I respect and appreciate how Appalachia was portrayed. So good!

Interesting story

I enjoyed listening to this story of magical realism about several generations of women living on Tin Mountain, AR, with special powers to heal trying to cope with an unwanted “traveling minister.”

It was OK, not quite what I expected

Well, there were witches, it was set in the Ozark, but I just didn't enjoy the time changes that much and the way they presented in an audible book made it difficult to follow.

Top Notch Narration

I honestly can't tell if this writing is good because the actors reading it were so good! Truly phenomenal. But seriously, it is good writing- especially dialogue and characters. I enjoyed seeing folk magic portrayed in a somewhat realistic fashion- though it pretty quickly developed into fantasy magic. Unfortunately the Wiccan rede got thrown in here- "do no harm" which was out of place- baneful magic was part of most magical folk traditions- and rightfully so. They also work in a "so mote it be" which is a new phrase in witch craft and not adopted till the neopagan movement. But over all I enjoyed this, and I'd like to read more books inspired by real folk magic traditions. I think the end felt a bit rushed and a little too neat/happy ending for my taste- this type of endings always ruin any real or authentic feeling a book may have managed to conjure for me. not saying it has to be tragic- but life rarely ends with everyone getting what they want and all live happily ever after.

Great story steeped in Appalachian magic

Very authentic to everything I know about Appalachian magic and the time periods chosen made for a very interesting read that felt like historic fiction with extra supernatural flavor.

A compelling story

I loved this story. I was intrigued by the twists and turns and by the varied characters. Forbidden loves and the consequences of giving into those desires. The narration was wonderful.

the apothecary/witch vibes are my thing

I love the fact that the characters used herbal teas for medical uses. it was a bit confusing at first of the story line. but I love the fact there were 2 audio storytellers for both points of view. I love love love this book/audiobook!

Wanted more

Like a lot of reviews, this story didn’t really have many plot choices that came as a surprise.
The number of comparison references was exhausting and unnecessary. Would have a hard time recommending as there are better generational magic books out there.

Relatable characters from my neck of the woods

I absolutely loved this book. The characters were relatable in spirit, as I too am an Arkansas native from the same area. The storytelling is gripping and beautiful. Suspense at the end of each chapter left me wanting more. And I was rooting for each character the whole time. This is one of those stories that won't ever leave me. I plan on buying a hard copy to always have.
