Fantastical approach to P &P

The narrator was pretty good, but like many others I wasnt as impressed with the male voices as the ladies.

I adored this version of Jane. By far it is one of the best I've seen in the 30 or so P&P variations I've read. I hate the "Jane is SUPER naive" with her head in the clouds - depictions where she isn't even aware that bad things happen to people... BUT this Jane is most certainly superior to that trope. Jane is still polite and kind, but here she has a backbone with an interesting & mature personality.

This story is a definite departure from P & P. Overall it is a good tale with clever dialog. But I didn't really feel like I was listening to a variation of P & P... more like it was a generic Regency "Duke" romance with some familiar names and places.

I don't mind P & P variations that completely diverge from the original by changing circumstances or settings... or even versions where some aspects of a character's personality are altered. But this one... well without giving spoilers just seemed to be more about benevolent aristocrats and landowners marrying within their class. Which let's face it, is certainly not what Jane Austen was attempting to do in any of her books.

Fun story to see Darcy lose a bet

The wager is a horse race between Darcy and his cousin. Darcy being the loser has to dance at 20 balls before the end of the year. No spoilers as you find this out immediately. This is a story of Elizabeth is not being a Bennet and has higher rank and wealth than canon. Mr. Bennet loves Mrs. Bennet, but missed out on marrying her first. She was blissfully married to a young rector and they had three children Jane, Elizabeth and her twin brother. Her husband and his brother died in an accident and Mr Bennet came to support and love her and her children after her mourning was completed. I really did enjoy Mr. Bennet’s love and care for his wife, especially after she had suffered a head injury and she struggled with memory and nerve issues. From their father’s side of the family the children had rank and wealth but it was a secret the community kept. Darcy meets Elizabeth at a ball in London and insults her but she along with her aunt and uncle took him to task. Darcy and his cousin travel with Bingley to Netherfield and keep the secret of the ladies family. Oh the Bingley family continues to stick their feet (not just foot) in their mouth repeatedly except for Mr. Hurst, who knows the truth and is laughing his butt off behind the scenes. Darcy is good at eating, humble pie and making himself agreeable to Elizabeth. Darcy and his cousin make good with Jane and Elizabeth and we get a beautiful happy ending.

Beautiful

This was a whimsical version of Ms. Austen's novel. Loved including Marianne and Miss Dashwood from Sense and Sensibility in this version of Pride and Prejudice.

Great read

This was a fun read. I highly enjoyed it. Ashton was a new character to me. He was a great chap. The narrator did a great job as well. Great Jaff

Great Dialogue

Interesting take on P&P - Elizabeth and Jane are titled daughters of Mrs Bennet’s first marriage to a younger son. Big difference in Bennet household with loving parents. This author does great dialogue. Much more sophisticated Darcy despite his original insult. The narrator does very well for female characters, but her males have light voices. Still a very enjoyable audio.

Lizzy and Jane are not Bennetts with low angst

I enjoyed listening to this book and finished it in less than 24hrs.
In this variation, Mrs. Bennett was previously married and Jane/Lizzie are not Mr. Bennetts blood daughters.
I normally don't love this type of variation, but we still got the insult of Darcy to Elizabeth - just in London here.

Lizzie is still clever and teasing.
The two meet again in the Meryton assembly and eventually Lizzie forgives Mr. Darcy.
After that Darcy knows he wants to marry Elizabeth and goes about pursuing her.
I love that Mr. and Mrs. Bennett are better parents and have kept better control of their children.
Caroline is way over the top and clueless about how to behave in society, but all in all I love the romance of ODC.
My only issue with this novel is that it jumps away from an interaction too quickly. There is a scene where Darcy has asked to court Elizabeth and they are walking hand in hand. Mr. Darcy calls Elizabeth a tease while they are both laughing. Then Mr. Colins put a hand on Lizzie to pull her away from Darcy. It them jumps to Colins complaining to Mr. Bennett about Elizabeth.
I would have liked to have known what Darcy did about Colin putting his hands on Elizabeth. We never get back to that. There were a few scenes like this I found annoying. I also wish we had some info beyond the wedding. I love when the story takes you further.

Overall, it is an enjoyable read and I was pretty satisfied.
The narrator was pretty good, but I have just gotten used to a few narrators that it is tough to get used to a different voice

Great story and fantastic narration! I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook. The author did a wonderful job weaving in bits and pieces of the original story into this one with making me roll my eyes, unlike so many other variations of Pride and Prejudice! This is one I’ll listen to again! Two thumbs up!

Loved it

Original story. Great characterization. I loved the clever banter and classy let downs. I laughed out loud. Nicely paced story. It would have been nice to have an epilogue.

Terrific story and excellent narration

Definitely a stretch from cannon, but very enjoyable. Nice short listen. Love the expressive narration.

I really enjoyed this book

When I first started this book I was just a little put off by the initial contrived prologue that set the characters up for the story, but once I got into it I really enjoyed how the characters were developed, and the banter, conversations, and responses that were all fun and engaging.
I always enjoy JAFF stories where Elizabeth and Jane are monied, and where Miss Bingley gets her comeuppance...which she most certainly does in this book.
A little surprised to see the Mr. Bingley character not be on the level, and love that the Bennett/Hamilton family, in general, are more knowledgeable, mature and less 'silly'.
Would definitely recommend!
