Intriguing story, good narration

The story isn’t action packed, not much action at all actually but it is intriguing and the characters are likable and already show growth first book in. I love that different species are working well together.

This story had it all mystery, romance, action and thrills. Listened in one sitting and enjoyed the whole ride.

Another winner from Helen Harper

It was very interesting to dive into a character from the Firebrand series. In fact, there is a whole lot more to Deveraux Webb than first meets the eye. I also enjoyed getting to know Scarlet as well. I've just listened to the Firebrand series for a second time while waiting for the last two books to drop, and this book was a very nice addition to that world. I'm going to start the second book right away!

I like Devereau Webb

I liked Deveraux when he was introduced in the Firebrand series. Now an alpha no longer the Sheppard of his criminal network because he is not accepted by his flock. Forced to deal with the segregation of Supes, he moved and has to deal with the clan. But finding a 12 year old girl and meeting Scarlet changes everything.

Good Story

I have a deep appreciation for female authors who can write really good urban fantasy novels without telling us every five minutes how gorgeous the characters are or turning the story into a shallow romance novel.

Fun color by numbers paranormal mystery

Although this occurs in the same world as the Firebrand series, MC (Detective Bellamy, a secret Phoenix) makes a couple of cameos here, and there’s an odd pixie or goblin thrown in, this book stays in the tried and true realm of werewolves and vampires. The mystery is also quite standard for urban fantasy, with a one note villain whose name I’ve already forgotten. And of course, there’s a budding romance for werewolf Deveraux, which will no doubt deepen as the spinoff progresses.

Even though formula, it’s a solid and comfortable one, making for easy YA listening. I appreciate that any sex is fade to black and that F bombs are well-placed (and kept to a minimum). I also like that both Deveraux and vampire Scarlet (the only character from the original series to become a MC here) are grittier and lippier than the MCs of the Firebrand series (which features the unfortunate trope of an ancient vampire and a perky young girl who’s “special”). The world building never gets too deep, so those new to the author can start with this spinoff and miss nothing.

A bad follow up to a good series.

I could not finish this it was so bad. The story lacks of any imagination and just uses story lines done better by others.
