Four full-length novels for one low price

Aran awakens in chains with no memory. He’s conscripted into the Confederate Marines as a Tech Mage, given a spellrifle then hurled into the war with the draconic Krox and their Void Wyrm masters.

Desperate to escape, Aran struggles to master his abilities while surviving the Krox onslaught. Fighting alongside him are a Major who will do anything to win, a Captain who will stop at nothing to see him dead, and a woman whose past is as blank as his own.

Caught between survival and loyalty, Aran must choose. If he flees he will live, but the Krox will burn the galaxy. Stopping them requires a price Aran may be unable to pay: learning to trust the very people who enslaved him.

A lot of entertainment for one credit

First, Chris Fox writing is quite good along with Ryan Kennard Burke's narrating performance.

The space opera is similar to a LitRPG genre in that the various mages go through what essentially is a series of level-ups but, pleasingly, without the irritating stop-action, story delay repetition of numerous recitations of incremental character attributes. The characters level-up are acquired after survival from battle encounters with gods and their minions. Also, I rather liked the somewhat novel use of mind-wipes to add an air of mystery to the 1st level characters. The en masse vampire-like mind-binding of vast number of characters is also a chilling story aspect when one pauses long enough to reflect on it, so I force myself to go into my "Move along listener, nothing to ponder on here" mode. There are also similarities to the J. S. Morin, 'Galaxy Outlaws' series, what with there being a dichotomy between mundane technology usage and arcane magic but, albeit, much less pronounced. Then there is an eerie inclusion to a creepy creeping menace that immediately reminded me of the teenage horror movie, The Blob,

If your interested in an action-packed space opera series, this one will not disappoint.

Beginning shakes with a strong finish

Okay so let’s start with why I think some listeners had issues with the first few hours. Our author is following several main characters throughout different parts of the sector. Unlike George RR Martin who clearly states in chapter titles when their is a transition from perspectives our author does not. As u are new to the characters it makes the first few hours difficult to follow as some character transitions make you initially believe you are in the same perspective. This cleans up after the first few hours and book 2 makes it more clear adding in titles and clearly stating the character we are following in the first few perspectives.
Okay now to the series. It is an interesting concept on magic and tech put together in a space faring society. We have some societies that rely purely on magic and another society that is attempting to use tech and magic together. We follow several main characters in their battle against space dragons who are bent on conquering and subjugating the sector. I really enjoy how the author has mixed spell theory and technology. The character progression is also fantastic. I feel like their are a lot of GAMELit elements in the book without the amusing boxes. Well that being said, I believe anyone who likes space opera , dragons , gamelit, and magic will enjoy this book. I personally have added this series to an autobuy!

Good Blending of Magic And Tech

This series blends magic and technology really well. So, if you enjoy both genres like I do you will most likely love this series.

Side Note: I thought since this came in a quadrilogy it was the whole series it is not to which I have mixed feeling... On one hand I wanted a complete series to listen to so I wasn’t waiting to continue it... On the other hand I am really enjoying the series so more books isn’t an all bad thing...

The narrator turned everything gay

So a narrator can either Cause a book to become a greater experience, or a nightmare. So far i think all the Characters is this book are gay. Not as in happy, or even a negative thing. Just deeply honosexual, all of them. The narrators voice is just to feminin, and as a resault all the Characters sound like a stereotype gay man, which makes it really hard to take this book seriously, and i does not need that as its story could have and probebly is written by a chinese manga author. Then again maybe i will change my mind if i continue, but i would just like to Warn people, as the reviews are weirdly high on this collection.

Okay for a one time read

The characters are well written. The author is decent with dialogue. The universe is not one I want to spend more time in. Universes like Star Trek or Star Wars you can imagine being on them and having fun. There is none of that here. The Shians are all massive ass holes with little redeeming characteristics and the humans are weak and uninspired.

Compelling story but needs polished mechanically

couldn't get past first installment. exposition was clunky and awkward, dialogue was forced, and while some story elements defied convention in refreshing ways in their combined application, they failed to coalesce for me in any way other than an eye roll. I think it might work better for me in a different format rather than print/audio. Still a compelling tale but I wasn't able to latch on to it.

Very interesting stroy

I found this series to have an interesting storyline. I did like the way Chris Fox works in the different characters, how they interact and what they achieve. The action is non-stop and the story is well-written.

Inconsistencies and inaccuracies

the general story is pretty good. Not many stories out there blending technology with magic and this does a decent job at that. Unfortunately, the author has no real sense if scale, distance or time. They throw out numbers that are inconsistent between scenes and books. It gets distracting at times. There is also the issue with the main characters implicitly being OK with their enslavement because they not only end up being better of others enslaved, but also are the all powerful protagonists.

The book could have done a lot better on several aspects, and if you can ignore them, it's a better read than most.

Weak start but gets better

The first book in this set was deceiving but as the story progresses it became excellent listening

Wow! Space dragon's and talking weapons!

I should start with I had the first book, but then saw the 4 pack and was sold (it seems there are now 7 books btw). I have listened to just about everything Chris Fox has put out, I think this is better than Void wraith (that I also really liked). there are shapeshifting dragons, space battles, and comic relief what's not to love?
