A short but very moving novella...........
The Lost Daughter may only be the length of a novella, but it packs a deep emotional punch. For those readers familiar with the author, this story is less religious than her Zion series, but it evokes a similar feeling of how lucky I am in my life compared to so many people today. As an 18 year-old on the cusp of becoming an adult, Jessica struggles with the usual teenage angst which is worsened when her adopted parents move her to another city, so they can open a ministry for the homeless. However, upon meeting some of the people to whom her parents are offering services, she quickly learns that problems with friends and her boyfriend pale in comparison to those of the homeless. Although this story focuses on potentially depressing topics like drug abuse, self-harming, rape and teenage runaways, I was so intrigued by what Jessica was learning about Mary and their connection to each other that I never felt depressed. As usual with this author, the ending left me feeling both a sense of hope for the characters and a hmmm moment as to what would happen next. I highly recommend this book for those looking for a moving and uplifting story.
Rick Barr is one of my all-time favorite narrators, and this performance is up to his usual high standards. Barr has a wonderfully soothing voice, and his delivery is incredibly smooth. He makes even the most boring story interesting, and he really shines while reading such an excellent story.
I received a copy of this audiobook at my request in exchange for this honest review.
