What makes a person a witch?

For those living in 16th-century Scotland, the very word witch is terrifying. Everyone is afraid of witches, both to be accused of being one and to be cursed by one. In a series of events beyond control, one family faces its ultimate fear and the consequences it can’t escape.

The very idea of witchcraft becomes all too real for the Dalais family. Caitrìona Dalais Guaire, Sorcha Dalais Creag, and Niall Dalais are torn from their homes and put on trial. Their very lives are at stake, and everything points to their eventual demise.

In an act of desperation, one of them arranges for the children to be secreted away to safety. Only time will tell if they are successful and if their legacy will live on....

Bust Out Your Hanky!

Before this story begins, the author gives a reader warning that this will not be a story with a happy ending. The author usually writes romances, which, of course, must have that. This book is meant to set up a future series showing one family's very tragic past. If you're at all triggered by physical abuse of females, violence (of several types), or being persecuted by religious zealots, you may want to avoid this story. It's focused on witchcraft in medieval Scotland, and a local woman doing a good deed (helping a woman with a problematic delivery) is proclaimed a witch after the woman is delivered of a stillborn child. The woman accuses her of deliberately harming the child through witchcraft, causing its death. While we don't see much of the torture of the woman (and soon her siblings), we do see some on-screen violence against her and her family.

But the focus of the book really isn't on those who are accused of witchcraft. Rather, the story concentrates on what is happening with the spouses and children of the condemned. In fact, the vision that one sister had as she's being burned alive at the stake is surprisingly uplifting and hopeful despite what she's going through. This is a challenging read or listen. You cannot help but feel for everyone involved and wish things would be different for all of them. The story’s villains are portrayed as particularly villainous. In general, I'm not a fan of black-and-white depictions of the bad guys in a story, but I can understand why it had to be so in this book.

I don't usually share so much plot background for books in reviews like this, but I think you need to be forewarned and forearmed before choosing this book.

The narrator occasionally pronounces a few words completely wrong, like epitome as epi-TOME and gestured as guest-ured, but I did enjoy her Scottish accent that certainly went along with this story.

Not an easy read/listen, but a good one.

it hurts so good

this is a short emotional beginning. I have to admit I am broken hearted, but what good story doesn't start with tragedy and or heartache. The narrator for this story was perfect for the time frame. she makes you feel you have been taken back in time right along with the story.

This short story lays the ground work for this series and I must say it is fantastic. The Dalais family has special gifts & are accused of being witches. These three siblings are just amazing they are able to hold it together and look fear and death in the face knowing the end is near but still have wonderful hope for future generations of their family. Nice job on the narration.

This is the saddest thing I have ever listened to

It is short and sweet in more ways than one. It is so sad but the author is right there always isn't a happy ever after. The kids live on and grow so I guess that is the happy part. My heart goes out to all the people who have died due to be calling a witch. The author puts it in a way that you really feel what these people went through. It is sad, and even sadder is that this could have been a true story.

The narrator have a lovely accent, she does a good job. How ever you do hear background noise and there are a few repeating of words. Her character voices are nice, you always know who is talking and their feelings.

All in all this was a good audio that will break your heart and bring tears to your eye.

Heartbreaking!

A well written short story by Brower that broke my heart but introduces 13 more stories in a mulit-author series, Enduring Legacy. Carol Stagg did a lovely job narrating, her Scottish accent adding authenticity to the audio. All of the books will include a descendant of the siblings from this tale. The two sisters and brother each have a special gift, passed down from generation to generation. In 1590, these gifts were viewed as suspicious and the three are accused of witchcraft. The stage is set. But you have to read this and cry a little first!

Wrongful accused

Having read the book first I thought I was prepared for what was to come but as it is in most cases the audiobook is sooo much better. Carol Stagg did a great job of bringing the book to life. I didn’t think my heart could break anymore for this set of siblings but it did. I can’t wait to see how the children will keep the legacy of their parents alive.

Sometimes it is difficult to look back in history

A look at a time when trying to help others could lead to accusations of witchcraft. Often, led by those of fanaticism or jealousy, a mob rule is a group without a rudder to guide them, pure sheep mentality.
I enjoyed the narrator's take on this tale.
