Acerca de esta escucha

Hidden in the far South Pacific lies the lost island continent of Caprona, forgotten by history and time itself. In the year 1836, Sicilian Captain Fausto Caproni and his sister Marina lead a voyage across the raging seas to rediscover the fabled land first sighted by their grandfather—only to plunge into a terrifying tropical world known to its inhabitants as Caspak, thriving with giant carnivorous lizards and bestial tribesmen from the dawn of time. With only swords and muskets to defend themselves, the Caproni siblings are thrust into a desperate fight for survival against Caspak’s primordial creatures, but a greater threat may be allies among the crew who harbor a deadly secret agenda.

Includes the bonus novelette “Weird Worlds: Voyage into Terror” by Mike Wolfer!

THE FIRST UNIVERSE OF ITS KIND

A century before the term “crossover” became a buzzword in popular culture, Edgar Rice Burroughs created the first expansive, fully cohesive literary universe. Coexisting in this vast cosmos was a pantheon of immortal heroes and heroines—Tarzan of the Apes, Jane Clayton, John Carter, Dejah Thoris, Carson Napier, and David Innes being only the best known among them. In Burroughs’ 80-plus novels, their epic adventures transported them to the strange and exotic worlds of Barsoom, Amtor, Pellucidar, Caspak, and Va-nah, as well as the lost civilizations of Earth and even realms beyond the farthest star. Now the Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe expands in an all-new series of canonical novels written by today’s talented authors!

When I say this is a modern tale, I mean in theme. Chronologically, it is probably the oldest story of the ERB universe that I have read, with the exception of the recent ancient Barsoomian novels. Our story here takes place in the mid-1700s. The protagonists are none other than the grandchildren of the discoverer of Caprona, anxious to prove that their grandfather's stories were more than an old sailors yarn. Three guesses if they find it again. The modern part of the story is wrapped around half of the two descendants, Marinna a woman who fits better into our time than the one she was born into. She is hamstrung by societal expectations. Caspak however, is different. Most of the stuff follows fairly well traveled ground, but they are entertaining grounds plus we have some political intrigues thrown in for good measure and good effect.

Also in this volume is a novella set shortly after the passing of Burroughs and relates the explorations of the Favonia airship through the "angles" or dimensions. This story is straight up science fiction of a 1940's flavor. Highly entertaining. I was a bit thrown however, as it referenced a previous adventure by the ships crew that I have somehow not read yet. Hardly a show stopper, but disconcerting all the same.

All in all, this was a fun pulpy read and worthy of Burroughs' legacy. Recommended!
