Among all of the conflicts that took place in American history, the War of 1812 is one of the most unique wars that helped to shape many of the important American milestones in the years to come. It was also a battle of surprises and irony, as well. Firstly, the weaknesses of both parties ultimately ended up being their respective strengths in the two years of constant fighting that started off in 1812. Secondly, the War of 1812 was the most pointless series of conflicts for the parties involved, as the geographical borders ultimately reverted to what they were before the war.

Joan's story almost feels like a novel instead of a part of history. She was a shining savior on a warhorse, waving her white banner and calling her soldiers forth to victory; but she was also painfully and intensely human, a young girl who wept and bled just the same as the rest of us. In the same breath, it is as easy to relate to Joan as it is to be awed by her incredible character. She may have been beatified as a saint, but Joan of Arc was in many ways a very ordinary human being, a person who felt pain and fear, a person who made mistakes, and who had moments of weakness.

It could be said that European kings and nobles in the Middle Ages were Crusade mad. The enormous amount of fighting men who periodically sailed off to the Near East to do battle with Muslims are evidence of the widespread popularity of overseas adventurism at the time. The notion of a Crusade, in which large armies assembled from various regions of Europe for the purpose of doing battle with Turkish and Arab Muslims, became so fixed that it was expanded to include Crusades against heretical European Christian sects.

I Loved It
Overall, a good telling of the battle that led the way to modern England and France, including their unending hatred that only subsided at the end of the 19th century. There is also a very good compilation to further study the 100 Years War in more detail.

I Recommend It
This book is unquestionably one of those short and sweet examples when it comes to non-fiction. It provides you just enough knowledge for you to get a grip on the whole condition but not too much to make you feel smothered.

Great Research
Well-written and based on what appears to be careful research. One hopes that this author will continue this look at history. I have traveled a little in France and seen some of the towns named in the series as well as Paris.

The Hundred Years’ War
The book is everything it promises, with one exception. This author is an extraordinary advocate, historian, and writer, but he wrote volume one before this one.
