Just weeks before his death in late 2016, Leonard Cohen told The New Yorker that he was ready for the end to come. He just wanted enough time to put his last book in order. Fortunately, that time was granted. The Flame is Cohen’s eloquent farewell, a valedictory collection of lyrics and poems that maps his singular creative journey. As noted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s citation, “For six decades, Leonard Cohen revealed his soul to the world through poetry and song - his deep and timeless humanity touching our very core.”

Historia
Vowing at an early age "to be a poet or nothing at all", Hermann Hesse rebelled against formal education, focusing on a rigorous program of independent study that included literature, philosophy, art, and history. One result of these efforts was a series of novels that became counterculture bibles that remain widely influential today. Another was a body of evocative spiritual poetry. Published for the first time in English, these vivid, probing short works reflect deeply on the challenges of life.

Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

Who is Audrey Hoedemaker? It's a question her sister Maureen has heard more times than she can count, and she doesn't know what the short answer would be. Little sister, troubled teen, backpacker, musical theatre coach, con artist, childcare worker. Murderer. A tragic, traumatic childhood casts a long shadow on the Hoedemaker sisters. Maureen has worked hard to move beyond the violence of the past and build a good, honest life for herself. Audrey, however, just can't seem to do the same, careening from one state of chaos to another.

When I was a little girl, I dreamed a handsome knight would come and rescue me from my wretched mother. He'd ride up on his white steed and break the curse I've been fated to carry since the day I was born. Funny how things changed over time, how the fairytale twisted into something far more crooked—and darker—than I ever imagined. In reality, my knight is scarred and broken, living alone in a castle of bones that overlooks the sea. He isn’t searching for me. He never was.

An Excellent Collection of Poems & Feelings.
I was lucky enough to get a free copy of this author's audiobook. It did not disappoint. I am not the most poetic of people but I found this book to be more engaging to my cold heart than expected. The narrator did a really good job of making me feel the emotions encapsulated in each passage and I came away feeling that I gained a deeper understanding of the author's truest of feelings. I think someone who truly appreciates poetry at the deeper level than myself will be moved by the author's words.

A lovely collection of poetry
This collection of poems flow together to tell a lovely story.
The author, Teresa James, obviously put her heart and soul into these poems. I was able to get a true sense of her feelings and emotions.
Courtney Young-Burgess did a lovely job of expressing the emotions of each poem. I enjoyed her performance.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.

Expressions through a rose
Great audiobook. The author Teresa James takes you closer inside to understanding all a rose has to offer. She makes it clear that a rose has different meanings as it interacts which each soul that takes in its aroma. The approach to a rose is delicate and so should it be to a woman's heart as well.

A beautiful collection of poetry!
A wise person once said that poetry has been invented to satisfy the cravings of the soul. In this beautiful collection of poetry, the author reflects on themes we can all relate to, including love, healing, and suffering. The gentle voice of the narrator adds to the delight of the experience, and I feel that poems like this remind us of how vulnerable we are as humans. I loved how the author explored a large spectrum of emotions, offering an eloquent perspective on the challenges life has to offer. Her poems come from a pure place, and they give us insight into her heart. What is the essence of a poet? Teresa James brings us closer to the answer, which I believe is simple: the words they give to us. We are taken on a journey of rhythm, where words blend into phrases that inspire and delight at the same time.

These poems draw on the heart strings
Poems have a way of embracing readers fully and wrapping them in the emotions the author seeks to elicit. In the case of author Teresa James, she attracts a large swath of readers as her poems draw on the heart strings of love and relationships.
Making this read even more enjoyable was the audio nature of it. Courtney Y. Burgess’ voice is made for this book of poems. She enchants you into the words, rhymes, and feelings in James’ penning of “The Heart of a Rose.” Admittedly, this was my first audiobook of poems and whoa, the power, intensity and mark left on me from hearing these poems read aloud was breathtaking.
Aptly named for the interspersed flowers and roses in the stories told, “The Heart of a Rose” takes readers through the tides of relationships, from meeting to falling and failing and back again. This book is broken into seven chapters, each with a leading theme. In each chapter there was a poem that especially resonated with me and grounded me to the rose title and chapter theme. For instance, in chapter one it was the poem titled “Why a Rose” which enlightened readers to the role a rose can play in so many things, in chapter two it was the poem titled “Yes I’m a Rose.”
The combination of James’ words, read by Burgess is not to be missed. They will soothe your heart, reach your inner depth, and embrace you to your core.
